External Playback on a TV?

I have a S cable connected to my video out on my ATI all-in-wonder9600 S-Out connector ran uninterrupted to a standard TV. I can set the monitor and TV to display at the same time so I know I have a connection. When I have Vegas open and want to play a project in my onscreen preview window all is fine. When I click the "Play on External Monitor" button in the preview window nothing happens. What do I need to do to be able to see my project on a TV? I have went to my "Video Device window and changed the settings and can seen a duplicate picture on my TV but it mimics what's on my monitor. I want to see a preview on the TV before I burn the DVD. Thank s in advance.

External preview is accomplished via Firewire, not the Svid out on your video card. You won't want to be color correcting or anything along those lines that might be color related, as the Svid out is coloring the signal as it is. Using a Firewire output, you can see an exact representation of what's happening with the signal.

Thank you for such a fast response. Is a cable ran from my Firewire port to a DVD player then to the TV? or do they make a Firewire cable that I can put a RCA adapter on and plug into my TV? Again Thanks

The signal coming down the firewire is a digital signal. It is compressed to the DV standard. The RCA connectors on your TV or VCR are analog inputs. You need a device to convert from Digital to analog. The ADVC 100 will do this. Most digital camcorders can also do it. It is not just a matter of connectors.

EDIT: The S-Video connector is also analog.

If your DVD player is also a recorder and has a firewire input for recording, then you may be able to use it in the fashion you describe. You'll have to do some testing though - my experience with these boxes has been that they can be very picky about what they will work with (my Samsung unit has a tendency to lock up at the end of tape when I hook a camcorder up to it - locks up so bad I have to pull the plug to get it to reset; given that behavior it would probably have fits seeing the firewire signal come and go with the clicking of the preview button in Vegas).
