External Video Preview Not Stable

Sparrow wrote on 9/19/2011, 6:13 AM
I am using Sony Vegas 9, with Windows 7 64 Bit, Motu and Canopus AVDC-100
for export. Sometimes it is very stable and other times it goes away. Was
wondering if the Canopus has become "ancient?" Is there some mystical
setting for the firewire card? If someone has found a new device that likes
Sony and Windows 7 64 bit? Does Vegas Version 10 deal with Windows 7,
64 bit with fewer driver problems? Should I get a device to send a mirror image of
the desktop to the client for dubs? Thanks! Sparrow In Chicago.

"Sometimes it is very stable and other times it goes away"

Could you rephrase or expand that statement please?

I sometimes use a firewire DV camera as a digital to analog converter for an analog TV as external monitor. The only thing I notice is that when you click on the external monitor icon to turn it on, there is a noticeable delay (second or two?) before it happens.

I will press play external monitor and there is a slight delay and it works.
But some days it will not come on at all, or worse it goes away in the middle of
an overdub. I did not have this problem with Vegas 5/Motu/and XP..
thanks

No, I have not experienced that. Have you checked your cables and connectors?

Cables and connectors are all fine. Can I ask what Vegas preview settings you
use for the firewire card? Thanks-

I normally use the full/best settings. I was only editing DV AVI at the time so not as taxing on the CPU as AVCHD would be.

Does anyone have information about what driver setting they use with
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Vegas 9, and Canopus 100?.., for external video
playback? Is there a problem with 7 and the firewire drivers? Thanks.

You probably shouldn't be using the device in the way you seem to be.
What you should be using is Vegas's Print To Tape function. That will check that the project can be printed to tape and if need be render any segments that need to be rendered.

All of that said the last time I used an ADVC device to PTT way for VHS and that was a LONG time ago. Why are you not using either a device with a firewire input as all DV and HDV VCRs have or else SDI if you're going to Betacam.

Bob...thanks for spending the time. In the past with Windows XP, I would use
the Canopus to feed the external video to the artists, so that they could see image
and do audio overdubs in Vegas 5, with Motu. I was working on the same thing
on a new system, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit/Canopus/Motu and it worked fine
for a day or so, then it went "away"??

Not sure if I can do audio dubs in the print to tape mode? Got any ideas?

"Not sure if I can do audio dubs in the print to tape mode?"

Not that I know of.

I don't know why exactly something that worked just "went away". Best first guess is something failed but what device is selected in Vegas as the "video device"?
