Extrenal HDD Racks

Hello
I was wondering if someone here uses external rack/enlcosures to store video, the question is because i want to get this thing( http://www.cooldrives.com/fodrulsarera.html ) for storing all captured video in vegas to one of this things so i can exchange jobs between 2 PC without the need of network usage, example when i use and extrenal program to capture video in this thing and edit in the PC with vegas. Is this a good idea or not?, since u can connect this box on the back of the pc with an external sata connecto on the back.

I have 26 drives all in their own removeable drive trays that I place inside an external USB/Firewire enclosure. It works great.

The device you're looking at is very different to that... so I can't offer any concrete advice as to how well it would work... although I guess it will probably work pretty well.

Liam what enclosure do you use?

Does anyone know of removeable drive trays that would work with a ADS USB/firewire enclosure?

The Lian Li RH58 series work fine. Not that there's much to go wrong as there's no active bits involved. I like these because there's two fans to keep the drive itself cool, not losta drive yet.
I'm not using the ADS boxes but I can see no reason why the RH58s wouldn't fit the ADS box so long as it's the one for CD/DVD burners.

Busterkeaton:

Yeah, I married a conventional ADS Pyro firewire external box with a drive enclosure/caddy system. There are numerous drive-swap enclosures; the one I use I bought at Fry's Electronics here in Portland, Oregon and is called "In Close." (?)

When I first bought the ADS case a couple of years ago, I got the idea of putting one of these racks inside it, so I could easily swap hard drives. A couple of points:

(1) You need to do some minor surgery on some stuff. For example, there is a fan shroud on the small fan at the back of the ADS case. I had to remove one of the four screws and cut off a small portion of the shroud in order to eliminate interference with the In-Close rack.

(2) The 80-pin IDE cable needs to be folded, accordion-style, in order to fit.

(3) My experimentation involved the use of an ADS Pyro box circa 2003. I have no idea what the inside of a current Pyro box looks like. I assume something must be different, because, for example, the version I have can't work with drives above 137GB.

(4) Oh, you also have to bend over a power connector on the ADS board. No big deal if you've ever fooled around a bit with electronics and know that doing this is no big deal.

I posted a lot of detail on how I am setup here

I had an ADS enclosure once - and it was too small for every drive tray I tried... so I went for something bigger... hence the ugly ones that I now use (ugly... but reliable).
