Fade from Black to text at beginning of project?

I can't seem to find a way to start off my project with a solid black background and then fade into a text block on a solid black background. It's like the software won't allow a fade in from the get go of a project if that makes any sense. The text graphic just comes in hard in the first frame like there's nothing before the text graphic...which there isn't. But, I want a fade from black to the text and can't for the life of me figure out how to do that if it's at all possible. I heard something a while ago before I bought the VMS Platinum Pro 9 that I'm using that there was some basic fade from black that wasn't available as a basic option in the software. Is this what I'm encountering? Thanks for any help.

This is easy as pie and is done all the time.
Start with a solid black event followed by a text event with a fade-in.
If the video is for the web be sure to place a 16-16-16 "black' underlay below the other video tracks.
btw, almost all of my DVD projects start this way . . .

If you don't need/want a "length" of black .. you can just do a fade-in.

After you create your text box put your cursor at the extreme top left (on the timeline) It will show a quarter circle and the words "Fade Offset" and some numbers. Just drag the cursor to the right and it will create a fade-in from black that starts right away. The length of the fade is determined by the distance you drag the cursor, but it always starts as black.
