fading only works sometimes

I have a project of still photos each of which overlap for one second. They overlap so the fade type is just the standard X shape...

strange thing is when i preview the video some of the fades between pics actually fade nicely and obviously over the course of that 1 second, just the way i want it it. Whereas others just abruplty snap to the next photo.

When I put the cursor over that 1 second fade between 2 abrupt snapping photos, you can see in the preview window that I am mid fade -- you can see both pics shining thru which indicates to me that the fade is in fact happening .... but why when I play the video does it appear to abruplty chnage from one to the other wihtout a nice fade? And why is this abrupt thing happening on just on SOME of my fades?

Your computer isn't always fast enough to keep up with calculating the preview image in real time. If anything bogs it down, it suspends preview until it can "catch up" and generate a new frame. Crossfades take a lot more work to display than a single image on the timeline, so these are cases where the processor gets behind and stops showing all the frames.

When you render your project the resulting file will play as you expect, with all the crossfades happening.
