I spent a lot of time trying to figure this one out, so I wanted to save you some time.

If, when you place a .png image on your timeline, you see a faint (square) image visible across your entire project?

Disable the Track Automation Settings. Track Hamburger Menu>Automation Settings>Automation Off. I have no idea why the Automation Settings cause this, but turning it off fixes the problem.
