It's pretty simple. Click the tool, pointer changes to a razor, use tool to click an event and it splits.
In actuality the "S" shortcut in Vegas is quicker to do, no need to take your eyes off the T/L and risk loosing your train of thoughts. The problem is your train of thoughts is distracted by the need to consider what will get split.
Now what would seem kool to me is a contoller / extra buttons on a Shuttle or whatever, just something under the left hand that changes the functionality of the pointer. This could be done using keyboard shortcuts I guess e.g. Press "S" and the mouse pointer because a Split Tool. Might be more intuitive the R Click then Select from popup.
I like the s button for splitting way better than what PPro has with the razor. Like Farss says you can keep your eye on the time line push the button and there you go done

Try holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift, then left-clicking the event where you wish to split. Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift, and then drag the mouse... and you split/edge trim.

Thanks for that, I'll try to remember those. It does seem a bit long winded to keep in one's head though.
At the moment I get the playhead where I want to split, Ctl+click the event I want to split and then hit "S" to split the event. Works OK because I get visual feedback of the event that is going to be split.
I actually mapped the S key to an extra button on my mouse. Works pretty well, but I am so accustomed to using the keyboard S key that I always forget about it!
Bob's suggestion at the end works pretty well, except if you already have an event highlighted that you can't see and you forget about it, cause then you split that one too if its touching the playhead. Sometimes I find randomly split events when I clean up the timeline at the end of the day.

Add to that what happens when the event is part of a group.
I always select the clip to be split by clicking on it, but this causes the curser to move to where I clicked and I have to set the cursor back again befor pressing S. With small clips and in my hurry I often click on the effects or pan/crop icons and have to recover from that. Personally I think the two icons should be removed and accessed by a right-click menu. I split much more often than I apply these effects because I do all my trimming on the timeline. (Brain-dead from using other editors) :)
