FAQ for takes in Vegas Audio

pfarrell wrote on 10/23/2001, 10:16 PM
I can't figure out how to do takes in a single track with any consistancy. Sometimes it works, other times I get earlier takes on playback, which confuses the artists.

Lets say I'm recording a vocal track after laying down drums, guitars, bass etc. I need to record two, four, eight, or how ever many tracks/takes of the singer until they like it. I can almost easlily use separate tracks for this, but it seems like the "take" facility should do it.

And please don't suggest RTFM, as that thing is 90% about video and I don't care about video. I'd love a manual for Vegas Audio...

Thanks
Pat

Select the area you wan to record. Loop it. Record your singer as many times as you want without stopping . When you finally stop choose the clip you recorded. This is the last take. Press 'T' and the next take will appear. Press 'T' while holding 'shift', and the preceding take will appear.

You can also right click on the recorded clip, and choose the take you want.

Record without stopping? Wow, I'd never think of that. When you do that, how do you listen to takes to see which one you like? Sometimes it isn't the last take that is best.

I couldn't agree more. Every thing about Vegas is geared towards the video version. There is so little available (tutorials, tips, etc)about unleashing the power of Vegas Audio 2.

I finally just upgraded to Vegas Video 2 so at least the manual I have will match the product.

Don't get me wrong, from what I've experienced Vegas Audio is a great tool, but I sure would welcome some tips on how to do somethings that I used to do with analog 2" multitrack tape.

Sorry Gary, I am looking for the answer.
What is a take in VA? How are they used?

The manual, page 160 and the following has nothing
about audio takes.

I assume someone put in a neat feature called takes.
How do I use them?

thanks

OK, Help me out, I'm sure this
will sound dumb, but what is an event?

I know that Vegas uses "event" to mean a block of audio in a track. For what I've been doing so far, I just record into a track, record the whole song at once. (I don't let the artists make many mistakes).

I know what tracks are. Events seems to be a strange term that I never have figured out.

And are there "event effects" like there are track effects and pan and volume envelopes?

Thanks
Pat

"how do you listen to takes to see which one you like? Sometimes it isn't the last take that is best."

OK, you've recorded with loop on, so you now have a bunch of takes in a single event.

select the event, and then type "T"- that swaps the media in the event to the next take. You can also right click on that event, go to takes, and see a list of all the takes and pick the one you like.

You can also combine takes by splitting the event ("s") and toggling through the takes on each one until you get the right chunk of each take. Sometimes you have to do this several times to stitch the perfect performance together, but once you get it down, it goes fast and is very versatile. Easier than splicing 2" tape on an MTR90.
