Use the JKL keys. Each time you press "L" the preview will get faster. "K" will stop, and "J" will go backwards faster each time you press it.

Yup. Can't believe I forgot all this. My daughter was using Pinnacle Studio and I was watching her quickly scrub through the previews quite easily and thought, 'How do I do that in Vegas?'
Thanks for your advice though.

Very cool! Always nice to learn a new trick.

Use the JKL keys. Each time you press "L" the preview will get faster. "K" will stop, and "J" will go backwards faster each time you press it.

You can get even faster preview by clicking and dragging the speed slider (not sure what it's 'official' name is) with the mouse.

This control is directly to the left of the 'record', 'play from start', 'play', 'pause', 'stop' controls in the timeline. It has a left pointing triangle, and a right pointing triangle with a left/right triangle set touching in the middle. It slides on a horizontal line. There is a vertical triangle, pointing up, below and just to the right of the control. This is the "normal play" indicator point. There is also a "rate" indicator giving a numerical value to how fast/slow the rate is currently.

The slider and the rate value will change with the pressing of the J,K,L keys .. but you can move the slider further with the mouse that the keyboard controls will allow.

This is from Vegas Pro, but it might be in the Studio version to ...

Options / Preferences / Editing / JKL Shuttle speed. Set it to fast to allow JKL to move up to 20x.

I believe that's called the scrubber tool. Both ways have their merits. Personally I find it very convenient and fast to use the Space and Enter keys to start/stop/pause video and I'll be adding the J-K-L (or was it H-J-K) trick to my repertoire.
