feathered crop division

i want to crop a clip so that only the left half of it shows, while the clips on lower tracks are revealed through the right half of the screen. i know how to do this, but what is the best way to have this happen with the vertical edge in the center being feathered?

You might also try using a B&W Vegas Color Gradient as a mask (without cropping), and try a slight curve using circle, or a slight slant using linear on an angle...
