Feature Request: Parameter Tracks and Parameter Automation in Vegas

lunar07 wrote on 10/10/2002, 6:14 PM
I started using Vegas where I work, and on the spot I believe the following can be a good feature -
Ability to automate DXi2 plugins that are inserted in a track or a bus.
Automation should be done in two ways:
1. Once a DXi2 plugin is inserted the user should be able to choose the parameter to be automated from a list of envelopes (as is the case with Pan and Volume) on the track where the plugin is inserted.
2. Have a type of Tracks: Parameter Tracks where user can also automate inserted plugins on audio tracks or buses. BUT allow user to also automate plugin via MIDI Controllers and MIDI note-on commands (latter to have some support for midi gates).

Please note that this is not to be construed as adding support for Midi Synths. Just the ability to automate a plugin via MIDI CC.

Finally, Vegas can already sync to a midi sequencer. Adding Synth and instruments into Vegas is NOT what Vegas is all about. Vegas is the final stop toward applying FX on Video tracks AND AUDIO Tracks.
I believe the priority should go toward automating plugins via parameters and via MIDI Controllers, and having a special kind of track (Parameter Track) can go to helping the user achieve such a task.

The Vegas Sync to sequencers is not adequate at the moment. A co-rendering enviroment and integration to the point of having the VSTis coming in on audio channels to be affected in Vegas is what is really needed.

A Re-wire solution could do this, expecially if it could be hooked up to an updated version of ACID with rewire.

If you take a look at how ACID has been done however, adding VSTi's etc to Vegas would not interfere with your workflow should you not want to use them. It would also give a much higher sales potential to Vegas, which would benefit EVERY user in the long run.

Personally, VSTi's or DXI2 Synths would not bother me in Vegas; specially, if it does not intrude on other areas. What concerns me here, is that such additions are not REALISTIC in prospect. We are talking here about a DIFFERENT product. This takes time and MONEY :).
My feature request was meant to build on something that can be useful in Vegas from within the scope of the functionality of Vegas.
Also, I do not think that SF will add support for VST FX or VSTi's.
I agree that Vegas Sync is not adequate at the moment. Hopefully it will be better.
But automating DXi2 FX through Parameter envelope automation, and through MIDI CC's sent on a new type of tracks: Parameter Tracks is a MUST. One can always use a VST-DX adapter to use VST's.
I do see your point. But let us be realistic. What you are asking for is not a mere feature request. But a different product. I never thought of Vegas as a sequencer. And what you are calling for is a different product. Again, what I am asking for is a feature request that belongs to the FUNCTIONALITY SCOPE of Vegas.

You should take a look at the ACID 4 demo. It has FX parameter automation that Vegas 4.0 will be based on.

ACID 4 has a great VSTi model that would also fit snugly in Vegas -

When that rock band asks to overdub a hammond or Rhodes... how easy and 'in the workflow' would it be to just add a VSTi?

I don't own a hammond or a rhodes, and that is simply the easiest way of doing it.

go on, it would be nice!

I have not tried ACID 4 yet. I am going to. Then I'll have a better idea of how SF is going with it.
Definitely Vegas is a great piece of software from a great company. With automation support, Vegas will be even greater.

I checked ACID Pro 4 and its FX automation, and that is exactly what I had in mind.
Couple of questions though:
1. Will we be able in Vegas to perform Send FX to Tracks (sending same envelope automation of one instance of an FX to a group of tracks) in addition to inserting a chain of FX and automating it on a track?
2. Does anyone know if automation on the audio track will be supported also in Sound Forge?

Finally, one thing remains missing: it is not supported in ACID Pro 4 and I may have missed it - automating an FX via MIDI CC. Many many FX have their sliders bound to controllers, and they can be automated via MIDI CC.
