Have you tested the DVD on another set top player?

Good question jrazz. I'm only seeing this problem on a (relatively) old Panasonic DVD-RV30. It doesn't happen on a Philips DVD727/07. I did learn one other thing. The problem only exists when I FF/Rewind faster than 2x when the player mutes the sound.

I don't want my quality to be player dependant. Who knows what vintage of player people will use to play my disks? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The reality is that "vintage player people" may not be able to play your DVDs at all, let alone deal with an audio issue. Players older than 3-4 years may or may not play any burned media - it depends on the player.

When I've encountered these players, I've found that DVD+R media burned with a booktype of DVD-ROM usually resolves the overall playability issue; however, there may still be other issues such as the ones you describe.
