Field Order Confusion

Maybe it just my camera (DCR-TRV20) - but I need some experts to clarify.

Project Video Options for Field Order - Lower Vs Upper Vs None (progressive).

I am doing some bezier masking on some things that are moving at a moderate rate. During the masking I get real strong ghosting/double images with either Upper or Lower. If I choose progressive it gets lots better.

I would like to understand why as it seems counter intuitive to me since my cam does not shoot in progressive mode. Once I understand the why, I probably can figure out some camera settings to help (of course free advice is welcome). Seems that I should get best results when it matches the camera output, but that does not seem to be the case.

Also the rendered video with it set to progressive is much clearer on the high motion shots. It's nice to figure out what works, but I really like to know why.

Motion will be clearer in progressive mode if the image is being viewed on a computer monitor. It will eventually be seen interlaced if it's ever viewed anywhere else, unless it's viewed on a progressive scan television.
DV is lower field first in nearly all instances.
Progressive scan is the full image in the frame, interlaced (fields) is a blend of 2 'half' images scanning at 60 half frames per second (60i) that creates a full image at 30 fps.
If you are never going to display your work on a television, work in progressive scan formatting. It will indeed mask more easily on fine detail. But, are you monitoring on an external, or only a computer monitor? You may not see the aliasing on a broadcast monitor. If the work is ever going to broadcast, you'll want to check masks on a broadcast monitor, or at the very least, a good television. Otherwise, you might be masking too little or too much, depending on the image.
