File management-newbie

I've just started using VV4 after having it for over a year! Anyway I'm enjoying it. Question: When I create a Veg file ( I know its small) how and where should I save it; Should I store in a subfolder of V4 or place it elsewhere, perhaps MY DOCUMENTS or should I give it the path to reside with my media files which are stored on an another Drive (D)?? Not in raid.

I know this is important due to the rendering process. Can anyone point to a good source, book or otherwise, that more thouroughly explaines the process. I have perused the manual but it does not elucidate as to my particular situation. I well understand that there can be many setups!!

Setup: C drive has XP pro and all programs including V4-WD 80 gig drive

D drive has video storage and other media (pictures, some music)
I have use this drive for INPUT. Is this correct or not? _WD 120 gig

Your drive setup and usage is good.

I usually create a new folder on my media drive for each new project, for example:

    D:\aunt_millie-wedding\

and store everything relating to that project in that folder, including video clips, sound clips, stills, and of course the .veg file. That makes it easy to remember where everything is and easy to find.

I do the same, except that I store the VEG file on a non-media drive (could be a c drive, but I use a separate drive I have set up fpr the purpose of storing non-media data).

Thanks for your help. It's nice to know that this forum helps with such basics.

reidc, just curious, but what advantage do you see in storing the .veg file separately?

After trying several file management techniques this I have found the best for me.

Master folder is D:/Vegas

Each project has its own folder; D:/Vegas/Wedding_20041030

In each folder create sub-folders like this;

D:/Vegas/Wedding_20041030/Project
D:/Vegas/Wedding_20041030/Media
D:/Vegas/Wedding_20041030/DVD_Architect

Download all media (Video and Sound files) to "Media"
Save project, and if saving trimmed media, that too, to "Project"
When rendering save mpeg/ac3 files to "DVD_Architect"
When making Video Master in DVD Architect save that file to the "DVD_Architect" folder also

When project completed, if needing disk space delete the "Media" directory if you have saved "with trimmed media". If you know you will never need to re edit then also delete the "Projest" folder making your DVD's ar required from the "DVD_Architect" folder. If the project is abandoned then just delete the whole "Wedding_20041030" directory.

As safety, always backup complete D"/Vegas to DVD on regular basis. I do this using Nero BackIt Up - it is cheap, many have it and it is very reliable and simple to use.
