File size - wont fit on DVD ??

I have some video files. I recorded off TV with a capture Card. The file size reads anywhere from 3.6 to 4.2 gigs. But when I go to write to DVD (in NERO). It tells me the file is too large for DVD. and can either compress the file or set it up for a DVD-9 burn.

I don't understand why a 3.6 gig file would not fit on a 4.7 gig DVD. Even giving room for it to add it's speical files and such.. shouldn't it fit. I'm not even using menus.

Hmmmmmmm.

Not that it matters much here, but a DVD is actually 4.3 G, not 4.7G. A dual layer disk is about 8.5 G (twice that of a single layer disc).

I'm wondering if Nero was going to re-encode your file before putting it on the disk. That could change filesize. If it was just a pure "build a data CD" operation then this wouldn't be a factor.

Also, if this was going to be one of those DVDs where you get drive letter access (i.e. packet writing in which you can keep dragging files to it and record files one at a time, pull the disc out, put it back in, and do some more) than it would take up some of the data space when it formats the disc.

If all else fails, assuming you weren't planning to play the videos directly from the disc, you can always use backup software for its disc-spanning ability.
