file suddenly won't open!?!

hello - I encountered a scary error yesterday! "Warning: An error occured while opening one or more files. The file is an unsupported format." But it ain't!!! I was working on this particular project and then my computer froze up (as it is prone to do occasionally, I don't think Vegas 4 likes my new XP machine ... ) so I rebooted and when I tried to open this file - BAM! Any hints or tips? Much appreciation in advance!

Sounds like the project file got corrupted during the crash and so Vegas can't read it correctly, thereby explaining the error message. I think you're hosed.

Well if it's not opening, it's not a 'suddenly' thing so much as as excruciating long thing !

It could be the project (Veg) file, but also could be the header in one of the WAV or w64 files. You could try importing each source file into a new project, and lining them up manually. Then at least the original takes would be there - at least, most of them....

i'd also be inclined to sort the freezing thing out too. It's not a VIA chipset by any chance ? Also, I've have freezes due to HDD cables not making perfect contact. IDE LEDs come hard on - so to speak. Trouble getting back even as far as BIOS - ("Waiting ...." message).

don't give up yet. This has happened many times. Go into to project file folder.

next to your projectfile.veg will be a projectfile.veg.bak rename this to projectfile2.veg and double click on it.

It should open and be the save before last of the project, and chances are, open fine.

If this fails, do a search for *.veg and open the files (temp etc) that appear a very close date, size and time.

I've been having a hell of a lot of this on 4.0c, no probs 4.0d touch wood!

Your chances are good! Good luck!

I have been having this "little" problem with Vegas, especially large files that have
complex subjects. One time, after the lock, Vegas asked if it wanted me to "fix"
the Vegas start up problem, why not?....so I said ok and it gave birth to a new corrected file? This file worked. One trick that works is to go to the drive that the
file is one, fine the main opeing file and open it from the drive..this seems to remind
Vegas of the importance of that key file, this seems to work, when Vegas gets locked..
we think this is a XP problem as it fights to control all forms of audio "earth."

Glad that the info helped...we went and did the upgrade to Version D..I was
still at times getting that error! about the file on the BIG project that we are working on..Our XP machine has a raid and I think maybe the raid and Vegas also fight at times, me I am not a computer cat, so I just keep messing with the files to get them to open...

Some things like real media player also don't like VEGAS..not sure why.

Have fun..
