How can I adjust to make sure I get the highest quality video file in my capture? They all come out as .avi files. When I capture, can I get a higher quality file type? If so, where do I make this adjustment?
Tell us a LOT more ... What is your source hardware and media? How is it connected to the computer? What capture hardware do you have in the computer? What program are you capturing with?
I'll make an initial guess that you're capturing from an SD camcorder through firewire with Vegas' VidCap. If that's the case then the capture program is simply transferring the bits from the tape to the hard drive with no modification at all. You would be getting exactly the same quality that's on the tape and that's already the best you can get.
Are you talking about capturing from a DV camcorder via Firewire? If so, the camcorder has taken the raw video and applied DV compression to it before it got recorded to tape, the "capture" is just a straight data transfer from the tape to the hard drive, it is already at the highest possible quality.
By the way, "AVI" is just a container like a tin can, it can contain video and audio compressed with any number of different codecs. AVI is one of the standard video container types for Windows. If you're capturing from a DV camcorder, the AVI container has DVC-compressed video at a 5:1 compression ratio with 4:1:1 color sampling and uncompressed stereo 16-bit PCM audio sampled at 48k. All this took place in the camcorder and when you capture, you're just transfering this data and putting it inside an AVI container.
I'm using a Canon GL1 in vegas pro ... fire wire connected ... so youre saying the AVI file I am getting is the best/ exact same as is on the tape ... I'm thinking playback quality may be due to my monitor
