Filing/labeling for Mini DV Cassettes

D. Collins wrote on 12/9/2008, 8:15 AM
I had a nice program that kept a list of cuts and made inserts for the plastic cassette cases, but I lost it when my computer blew up some time ago.

I don't remember the name of the program (freeware) and cassettes are pilling up without a clue as to what they contain. Does anyone know of a program for labeling?

Along the same line - How about a tape rewinder. All the ones I've tried to buy are no longer made.

Thanks - Dave

I believe the software you are looking for, is no longer. It is Videomatica. It used a filemaker pro runtime stand alone database engine and would print out a sheet of mini dv inserts. ( not individual labels) a convient program. I do have an archive of the install. (ver 1.1b) if you cannot find it through google. its old, yet seems to run in vista 64. someone should resusitate it and add features like single label printing (its only flaw, and was the showstopper for me.
Thanks
Steven

Here is one that I've not tried but looks somewhat promising:

Select the labels page display, "File", "Print", "Current Record"

"How about a tape rewinder."

Not a good idea anyway. There's precious little wear on a transport rewinding a tape and the tape pack is better after playing it so don't rewind tapes prior to storage. It doesn't matter so much with digital tapes but then again you gain nothing rewinding it either.

For good reason - they are crap. None of them are smart enough to slow down near the end of the tape, or detect the clear leader to stop the rewind. They depend on the tape being secured to the hub to slam it to a sudden stop from high-speed. And that is not 100% reliable.

Sorry for the late replay, but the holidays got in the way.
gogiants - I like the look of the 'Cassettedv' program, but had all kinds of problems trying to get it to work.

biggles - Thanks for the link to Videomatica. I download it and am back in business.

Stevegotts & Steve Mann - I have the same problem with the program refusing to print only one label even if I click on the 'print this label only' button. It does waste paper, but...

Farss - I'll forget about the rewinder if there is little wear on the transport system.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

"'print this label only' button"

That won't work. You need to fo into the file/print menu and print current record.

If you have the form window active in the video.VMM and go to file > print and select current record and click OK. You will then get a print of that black form window. But interestingly you can now select the "Print Label" and you will get a cassette formated label. You can also go the the "Label" page where the "Print this one only" appears and it WILL print just that one label.

Videomatica is a pretty nice program with nicely layed out labels and search function. But it's printing functions are, well, disfunctional. When I first started using this program I would rarely get what I was expecting. Trial and error was in command!
