Film> How close can we get?

Im sure this has been topic of conversation here more than once.. I tried to do a search but sofony's servers couldnt supply me with any search info.. it just sits there and hangs..

Anyhow .. People are talking about magic bullet alot. It must be a good app.. Problem is it has to render out that way.. then you put it in vegas and edit it. wouldnt it be nice if the next vegas version had film tools in it?? How awesome would that be?

Since were not there yet nor can we tell the future.. At least I anyways. How do we make use of the tools we have in vegas now??.. I tried to play with the film grain etc.. but results were un satisfactory.. Can you friendly folks give me your recipes of how you use just our current tool VEGAS and make it look as close to film as possible?? Being a novice Im sure there are methods and functions I am un aware of..SPOT your 2c would be appreciated as well; what methods and programs do you use?..... Thanks in advance

Hey Scotty I am a Long way from being a forum expert but If I can help then Its worth my 2 cents I hope Anyway there is lots can be done with filming technique before you even get to post production.

Some of the stuff I have learnt for a film look in no Particular Order.

1. Lighting is very important ot give a 3D effect

2. A Dolly to change the perspective with a zoom you dont

3. F stops try to put the background out of focus

4. Get a Camcorder with Film Mode

5. Add some blur.

6. Use color Correction to get a better black, and alter the Gamma levels
see Billy Boys Tutorials.

7. Vegas already has some film filters although I have not had much
success with them

8. Use lens filters like cokin ect

9. Film in Widescreen.

10. Do a search here in the forums about the Film Look.

11. If you use the glow filter from vegas (White) combined with levels and
adjust the settings "I At least have been awestruck by the film look
Achievable (Filmy supplied this Info in an earlier Post)

12. Adding noise can help give a grain effect

The search function sometimes "hangs" for 5-10 seconds. You need to be a little patient. I just did a search for "film" in the subject line in the Vegas forum and got 536 hits. Here are a few results from that search:

film look

Can I record back to film?

Best Video FX for film like quality?

There are more if you want to do the search yourself. I had to wait about ten seconds for the results. Be patient.

In addition to mark2929's input...the single best / easiest film look I have achieved is to:

during production:
-shoot widescreen
-light dramatically / cinematically

in post:
-bump up the contrast a little bit, as well as the contrast center point
-render as 24p

Can I add my 2 cents worth.

If you seriously want the film look then shoot on a AG-DVX100 taking heed of much of the other advice that has already been given.

Just be prepared to accept the same set of limitations that film imposes.

Shooting at real 24p you will have to face issues that you don't have at 50i or 60i.

Ok so after reading some of these replys.. Excuse me if Im wrong but I can take my 60i camera videotape my footage then put it in Vegas and Deinterlace it and add some effects render out to 24p and hypothetically come out with the same kinda or similiar look that the Pannasonic DVX 100 has?? Am I correct??

If this is so considering the focus and other issues when in 24 p mode while using the DVX 100 wouldnt it make sense for us to do it this way? 60i and work with the video in Vegas to come out with same or similiar product???
