Turn off autofocus and focus manually.

And, adjust exposure manually, or the blackness of the surrounding sky will throw off your readings. Zoom in on the moon til it fills your viewfinder, and adjust your exposure. It'll hold proper exposure thru zoom range after that.

I don't think the VX2000's 12x zoom range will go that far. Perhaps he was using the digital zoom?
