So, I started Googling and seeing how other folks deal with FCP and WMV.
I came across some amusing comments.
>>>windows media sucks big time and as a creator you need teach people about that...i personnaly REFUSE to output as wmv, and i do explain why...
>>>are there any other preferred formats that i can use so that PC users can also view my works? >>With all those millions iPods selling like hotcakes, you know many a PC jerk already has Quicktime installed.
And if not, get them to install it.
>>>when i get asked if i could manage client's videocontent so it gets played well on powerpoint, i always answer :
"no, i won't do that cuz it sucks"
"i can however make for you much a better job in the form of an interactive movie that acts just like a powerpoint, only so much better"
the client then gives me his powerpoint which i import in keynote and re-do with style and video.
Very quickly done job, impressive resulsts for the client. easy money for you, with the happy feeling of not letting people use their stupid bad habits of lame presenting ("power"point), plus it makes quicktime installed on client's computer, which is great to me.
>>>I've been asked to make a clip from a show we've just completed in the WMV format. Can't find a direct way to do that out of FCP, QT Conversion, or QT export.
How does one do this very distastefull task?
>>>i'd just add my very personal grain of salt :
every time i get asked to ouput a WMV, the only answer client gets is "although i cluld do it, go to hell, i'm the video pro, not you. i tell you WMV sucks and you shall use quicktime (i can set it up for you if needed)" (well actually i don't exactly use those words...but you get the picture)
On a not dissimilar note. Comment from a macolite who can't get EX1 footage into FCP:
"Typical bloody Sony, how can a company build a camera that doesn't work with FCP?"
What made it so funny was of course that the camera DOES work with FCP, there's plenty of info on various fora on how to do it and what you need to have in place but still, somehow, it was Sony's fault.
