FINAL POST ON QUADCORE PROBLEM

Hi all,

Well after weeks of frustration here is the final report on my Quadcore problem and Vegas Pro 8a.

After transferring my entire feature film project (made up of m2t's, Cineforms, a few movs and other bits and pieces) onto a 2TB external drive, the project is now rendering out on my Dual Xeon machine from a few years ago.

The renders are relatively slow compared to the little bits I was getting out of the Quad (before the inevitable crashes and error messages ranging from 'exceptions' to 'generated a problem and don't know why' to 'your system is low on memory' etc etc etc.) but at least the renders are long and perfect!

I'm rendering as both Mainconcept m2t's in 720p and 1080i and it's very stable ... ( a couple of clips downloaded off the internet from stock footage houses have caused the renders to stop ... they were a couple of movs uncompressed) but apart from that everything is fine.

The only other problem on the Dual Xeon was arriving at a stable CFHD.dll setup (ie: the Cineform codec). I've always had problems with capturing with Cineform's NEO HDV ... (Connect HD was fine ... NEO has been a total pain) ... I found that if the very latest version of NEO HDV (and it's subsequent CFHD.dll component dated 8th January 2008) was installed on the Dual Xeon machine - the Cineform files on the timeline would report themselves as being Version 3.5.5 ... AND THE PROJECT HAD THE SAME 'LOW MEMORY' ERROR AS THE QUADCORE.

When NEO HDV was uninstalled and then an earlier version of NEO PLAYER (forget all the capture stuff and just grab the codec - CFHD.dll is now dated 8th September 2007) was installed on the Dual Xeon machine - the Cineform clips then reported themselves as being V3.3.0 ... and guess what ... the renders are rock SOLID!!

I've tried the working version of CFHD.dll on my QUADCORE ... just to check to see if that would help with stability while rendering... but the same pattern is still there ... exception errors ... low memory errors ... crashes and disappears off the screen etc etc etc on exactly the same project.

SO! That's now about 6 weeks wasted proving that MY Quad at least DOES NOT support Vegas Pro 8a.

For interest sake here are the details of my QUADCORE etc from Everest in case it helps Sony fix this a little quicker. (Also, just in case you haven't read my previous posts ... my supplier sent a more recent QUAD out to me for testing and I had exactly the same errors on that machine ... don't know what it was but it was a Quad running Vegas Pro 8a.)

This si really bizarre.. i mean i am yet to do a longform project with V7 OR v8 in HDV or CF since i installed my quad (bout 3 days ago) but one thing i alwyas did with my old systems was allocate teh pagefile size myself. I NEVER let windows determine the page file as it ALWAYS used to puke as the directives from teh apps to windows kernel would always puke and the pagefile would never update and refresh the buffer. In turn, by locking down the pagefile i found that it would respond much better.. this was generally for all apps.

Now as ive upgraded my ram from 1gb to 2gb, my pagefile size in my OS increases. So i did that and now ive set my pagfile to be no more than 3gb. I have not however allocated a seperate drive or partition for my Pagefile. Instead its on my Local C drive. Personally i think that a seperate partition for the pagefile is pointless especially considering the fact that a partition's drive will still rquire physical movement of the drive head which adds wear and tear to the HDD itself.
If however the system can write to the partition without the need to physically move to another partition, then latency is decreased..
That and i dont know how to alocate the Pagefile to a different drive, so there u go.. lol

In any case, if your having memory issues, im thinking it might be a Vegas memory thing. because i DO know that whenever im editing M2t's my pagefile hits the roof, whether its on my Quad or on the old setup (of the same system, with the same OS, with the same HDD's )

Maybe give that pagefile lockdown a go...??

Have you tried the render test? I fuodn that its a good indicator of how the pagefile is used and managed, in addition to how the cores respond.

Open task manager while it renders and check it out.
It could well be that your pagefile doesnt stop when it hits its allocated peak. (ie, if u have 3gb ram, your pagefile would be 4.5gb, if you have 2gb, your pagefile will be 3gb)

In this instance, (pagefile not stopping at peak threshold capacity) the pagfile will keep climbing and climbing and climbing till the system locks u or the render pukes (out of memory failures).

I recall i was at Newmagics booth at SMPTE or DMF i think it was.. i cant recall now but I was doing demos of Vegas 6 on NM's behlaf and someone came up to us with a removable drive and had high res Tiffs and was saying how they couldnt render them becuase this was what was happening to their renders (pagefile climbing till it toppls)

it was the first time multithreaded performance was offered within Vegas and there were many issues, but it woudlnt surprise me if theres still a niggling issue here with a certian line of chipsets or configs.

Just a thought.. give the pagefile a tweak and see how u go.. u never know..
