They aren't all the same quality-wise. The 100 was quite good and I think the 110 would be as well. Before getting anything, hunt down threads on it through google. Especially google groups, which of course is the venerable USENET.
The 100 had a problem that could cause it to fry. I suspect that the 110 doesn't have that issue. If so, it'd be pretty good.
If you need to digitize old home movies, you might look into something that offers a time base corrector.
I use the ADVC-300 and it's also a great box that works very nicely with Vegas. You can run the supplied utility along with VidCap to tweak thing while you capture, very handy for those jobs that don't have a lot of money in them.
I don't know much about the 100/110 but if they're anything like the 300 then the cooking problem might be related to the fan, do NOT block the ventilation holes!
I'd be very wary of the cheaper converters, they certainly are not all the same, the ADS unit had an aweful lot of issues initially and I still see people here having problems. It really all depends on what you'll be using it for, if it's just VHS then even a D8 camera / deck will do an excellent job. If you;re coming off BetaSP you might look at spending some serious dollars to get component input, I think Lairds Blue Flame is an industry standard and the SD Connect from Convergent does a great job but be aware it doesn't have a TBC!
Just remember, if you go the Digital 8 route, only a few models have "Pass-through", which is what you need to transfer your videos. They do an excellent job and do have the TimeBaseCorrector to help deteriorated VHS signals.
