Firewire deck control but no capture?

I have a friend with a problem I've never seen. Apparently he can control his new JVC camera via a Matrox capture card with firewire (Texas Instruments chip) but he cannot transfer any video to his computer. Strangely, when controlling the deck with FWD & RWD, his computer even displays the proper timecode of the tape position. But when hitting play or capture, just a black screen.

He just tried capturing with another computer and capture card with the same results. The camera is a JVC GR-D33u. Thanks...

Could it possibly be a bad firewire cable?

Does he have video preview enabled? If not, that may explain why he doesn't see anything during capture. And if there are no files resulting, is he absolutely sure about where the files are supposed to go? There has been some agony over Vegas' capture file management, media pool and all that.
Anyway, just a thought, because everything seems to be OK.

Thanks for the thoughts. Yes, he has these bases covered. As a matter of fact, with the Vegas capture tool, he can't even FWD & RWD the tape, as he can with Nero and MS Movie Maker. Vegas immediately gives him a "cannot communicate with device" error message, so aparently it's detecting the problem before the other apps.

We think it may be a strange issue with the camera, and he is going to call JVC. Strangely though, a cursory search of google groups shows several other people who have this same problem with various hardware, though no one seems to be familiar enough to offer a solution.
