Firewire drives... how fast are they?

Hi, I'm running Vegas Video on my Gateway 750mhz laptop
with a 24bit VX Pocket PCM Soundcard. Trouble is, at 24bit,
I only get about 6 or 7 tracks before everything starts
dropping out. I think the onboard drives are only 5400rpm.
Although they're still fast enough for DV video.

I've heard about these firewire drives. Considering
firewire is quite fast, I assume the drives must be also?
So I'm just wondering if I got one of those, if it would
enable me to run more tracks in 24bit?

firewire can easily sustain the throughput of an external
7200 rpm drive.. i know ADS makes kits to enclose a hard
drive in a firewire housing fitted with firewire ports.. it
sells for about $150...

i have a 5400 rpm 80gig maxtor in a ADS firewire enclosure.
sustain throughput is 15-17mgs ... also have 3 80 gigs
inside my dell 4100 ATA 100 .. they get from 23 - 27mgs
sustain .. the firewire drive has to convert the "firewire
language (data?)" into IDE data that the drive can read ...
