Firewire vs usb 1.1 streaming

Hi,

I have a sony DCR-TRV245E Digital Handycam. Im currently using the usb streaming feature of the camcorder to get the video onto my pc for editing. The quality of the video once it has got to the pc does not seem to be as good as when watching it either on the camcorder or on the tv. Is it just because usb 1.1 is too slow and cant handle sending the video effectively? Would I be better of buying a firewire cable (I have a firewire card in my pc)? Will the difference in quality be noticable?

Thanks

Yup, you've pretty much figured out the problem, if you come out via firewire instead of USB you will get much better quality.

Firewire is the only way to go. Some of the older threads address the benefits of firewire vs. usb. Check Spot and John Cline Threads. Spot's website is a good source,DMN Forums, DVI,...

Thanks for the advice guys (gals?). I'll try and get a firewire cable by the end of the week.

I'm a bit miffed that sony didnt give me one since they gave me a usb cable and one for hooking it up to the TV seems a bit wierd not to give a component that will give the highest quality...

Any hoo, i have another question. Is the process of capturing the video pretty much the same with firewire as through usb?

Thanks again

Yes it is.
The FireWire port of my camcorder (Sony TRV22) is broken (known issue of this series TRV19,22 & 33) and I've been using the USB on some videos just for fun until I get the money to fix the firewire.

The Vegas video capture works the same way, obviously identifying the firewire connection instead of the usb.

BTW, I noticed some distortion when capturing via USB. The audio sometimes was on 44.097 instead of 44.100.

Weird...
