First Thoughts: Sony Sound Effects Series Volumes 1 - 5

Hello everyone,

I just received the Sony Sound Effects Series Volumes 1 - 5 and I wanted to post my initial thoughts on the set, since others have expressed interest on this forum. So far, I must say, I am very impressed. All the sound effects are saved in the .wav format, they are really well labeled, and they are stored in well organized folders ("Animals", "Natural Sounds", etc...) I plan to copy all 5 CDs to my media drive for easy access.

I haven't used them in a production as of yet, and I obviously haven't listened to all 1,200 effects yet, but the ones I have sampled sound excellent. The Vehicle disc really sounds great. Simple things like old and new door open/close are very "real" and subtle sounding, as in, not too obviously staged or too punchy like some of the cheap files I've downloaded in the past. There seems to be many fly-bys and left-to-right type effects on the vehicle CD. (There is at least 4 different MIG fighter jet sound effects, obviously useful for the wedding and event Videographer out there :-).

Since each file is labeled in detail ("Water Drips Echo in Room.wav" "Single water drop.wav" etc..) -- it should be easy to incorporate into our projects since we can view the Windows Explorer window within Vegas. The set isn't the cheapest at $399(US). But if you think about it, that's only .33 cents per sound effect. Well worth the cost considering how great it is to have them stored on your local machine and only a key stroke away.

Just my .02

Jeff

As I'd commented on in my review of the library, http://www.dmnforums.com/cgi-bin/viewarticle.cgi?id=29135 this is a smokin, scary collection of sounds. Sony is giving us access to things we've never had before, and I for one, am very excited. I'm glad you liked the sounds too. For such a minimal investment, WOW!

Spot - nice review and I have to agree with you so far. Great quality sound when played back through my full range speakers and ZERO sign of a limited frequency range like the other canned sounds I've bought in the past.

I'll give it.... 5 stars.

Looks very tempting indeed. Are there are any other reviews or comments ?

I'd specifically like to know how many longer samples are included. For example, are there any sort of "ambient background" samples of countryside, wind, water, cities, suburbs etc. I suppose I'm looking for samples up to a minute or more long.

And are there any effect libraries which directly compete with this one ?

Thanks for any extra information :-)
