Flat Panel calibration

Does anyone have a recommendation as to how best calibrate a flat panel display so that the preview window more closely resembles the final product (which will typically be a plasma HD TV)?

Is that even practical or should previews always be done on a CRT? I am not editing commercially, just home movie stuff, maybe a kids soccer team banquet, etc. So it doesn't need to be perfect but it becomes very hard to color correct, get brightness levels correct, etc. if what you see in your preview window doesn't really match the final product

I guess what I am asking is what is the best method of ensuring that the preview window closely matches ultimate display on an HDTV short of buying a $2,000 video monitor.

Thanks!

These days, I preview everything on a flat panel LCD. athe best you can do is
1-make sure your screen display is set to the same RGB range as the waveform monitor(choises are studio or computer rgb)
2- the results of your render match what you went into the render with(it helps to bring along a color bar and pluge during the render process)
3-make sure what you render to matches what your viewer will be using. generally, that's sudio rgb(ie RGB16-235)

I find the calibration utility in Adobe's OnLocation excellent.
