Flicker on pictures- how to resolve please?

memory maker wrote on 1/5/2006, 11:40 AM
When I do picture compilations with my Vegas 5, sometimes some of the pictures seem to flicker in spots, especially if I am zooming or panning (even slowly), and sometimes even on pictures that have no motion. But this is not with every picture. How can I minimize or get rid of this? What causes this? Is this where "deinterlacing" comes into play? I just can't figure out why some pictures do it and some do not. Any help will be appreciated!!

This has been addressed 5 billion times. Try doing a search and use the word "Flicker"

I wish Sony would create a FAQ. This question would be number 1. And this post makes it 6 billion and one.

Here are some links I keep handy, but you'll find much, much more using the search feature:

I'm not 100% certain of this but things seem to be slightly different between V5 and V6 so possibly some of the older posts might not hold 100% true in V6. I haven't done extensive tests so I really cannot say for certain but certainly GB seems to work differently.
If anyone else has noticed anything different I'd be interested to hear.

Although it's been addressed 6 billion plus times, sometimes the best solution gets lost in the myriad of answers.

For me the solution is a gaussian blur setting of 1 (the minimum) vertical and 0 horizontal. If I'm doing any kind of photo animation on a 60i project, I set one track up for this using a sony gaussian blur filter inserted on that track set with a vertical blur of 1and a horizontal blur of 0. This totally gets rid of the flicker and the photos still look really sharp.

The effect you are seeing is called spatial aliasing and is a cousin of temporal aliasing, the effect of wagon wheels turning backwards in some western films. As indicated above, you get rid of it by reducing the sharpness of the image.

6 billion posts and 6 billion fixes !

What i do is batch all the photos into photoshop and resize them to 720 x480 or 654 x 480.

Works most times

These are the settings I use when cropping video or for still photos:

Project settings:
* Full resolution rendering quality: Best
* Motion blur type: Gaussian
* Deinterlace method: Blend fields

Event switches:
* Maintain Aspect Ratio
* Reduce interlace flicker
* Smart resample or Force resample
