Flicker to black during transitions with .wmv

I searched through probably 100 topics trying to find an answer, and it seems that I may have solved the problem, but I would like to know what causes it.

The problem was that I was sometimes getting random black strobing frames in some of my transitions. The glitches would not usually show up until the project had been rendered into a new video, but then they could not be removed. This problem has literally destroyed many of my videos, and it has made me feel somewhat hostile towards the Movie Studio program itself.

After reading many posts today, I had proposed that it may have somehting to do with either the format of the source video or the final rendered video, which are usually .wmv for both. I went into the project that was the absolute worst to date and found one of the transitions in question. I re-redered that ~4 second section in .avi format, and it came out just fine (but HUUUUGE, of course). Then, I tried rendering it in 3mbps WMV format, and the glitches just came back. I like the 3mbps setting best because I can compress it further via Windows Movie Maker and wmv format, and it doesn't lose a lot of quality like it does when I render an mpg or avi file to wmv. The files must be small enough to download, but still high in quality. AVI's are just too big for me to mess with all the time, so is there any way to achieve these results without using avi compression?

Here are the two versions of the same trasition:
