Flickering and unsharp titles in NB Titler Pro 5 - solved!

Martin L wrote on 10/26/2018, 5:03 AM

Hey, I was so frustrated and wanted to write a post asking for help with flickering and unsharp text in New Blue Titler Pro 5. But I figured it out so instead I write to explain what the problem was, and how to solve it, in case anyone else encounter the same issue.

It was a VP15 project and some, but not all, title texts were jittery and sometimes very blurry after rendering the video. I tried to rerender after rebooting the PC first, after switching the Dynamic Ram Preview on and off, after switching GPU acceleration on and off, but nothing helped. I opened the project in VP16 doing the same experiments in case it would handle the graphics better, but to no avail.

Then, after reading through NB Titler help I bumped into the cache settings. The help document said nothing about my issue but I learned that you can go into a NB title and in the menu select Title/Cache actions and then Re-cache this title. This made the trick! Then I saw you can also select Re-cache all titles. This fixed all titles at once and the project was rendered out with all titles and texts completely stable and sharp. Voila!

Now the videos are delivered to my client and I don't have to be embarrased about poor quality.

Hi Martin,

My name is Caleb and I work in Tech Support for NewBlue. Thank you very much for sharing your solution. I will add an FAQ to our Help Center to suggest re-caching titles in VEGAS. Hopefully that will make the cache action controls more discoverable (and as a solution to poor quality titles in VEGAS).

Thanks again for sharing!

My pleasure! :)

Sorry to return to this. The solution I described above no longer works. Titles are flickering again and are unsharp, even though I recached them just before render. Tried several times, with and without GPU rendering etc. Even worse, after several attempts one of the titles now lost its text and formatting completely after the last render. Now that title just says "Enter text" in plain unformatted text.

This is so annoying. Right now NB Titler Pro is useless.

...one of the titles now lost its text and formatting completely...

I encountered huge problems with TP5 with disappearing titles - they just disappeared randomly on re-opening a VP project. TP5 titles that disappeared on the last opening sometimes re-appeared on the next VP opening, but other ones that were okay last time then disappeared on that subsequent project opening. NewBlueFX got me to use a test version of TP5 to try to track the problem down, but the updates didn't change TP5's behaviour. I made sure that I saved each title as a project via TP5's menu in order to import them when the disappearance occurred later on. I also had to check each and every TP5 title before rendering the VP project. So infuriating!

Although I did update to TP6 - which seems to be stable so far - I now use BCC Title Studio for straight forward titling and only use TP6 for more complicated titles because TP6 does provide a lot of excellent features.

I can't remember whether or not TP5 has a menu option to turn on or off Motion Blur while rendering (or something similar to that). If it does, try turning it to off - I vaguely remember NBFX suggesting that as a solution to a problem I was having with an earlier TP version.

Re the Motion Blur suggestion, I should have prefaced that by saying that is in relation to the flickering and unsharp problem.

i find the 'blurry titles' issue constantly affecting my titles (titler pro 5)... my solution so far is that you just need to open each blurry title one by one (i think the preview settings need to be set to best in vegas).. and then render out... the annoying thing is you never know if any of them gonna turn blurry again.. so before each render you have to check all the titles to make sure they're ok.

Martin L wrote on 11/5/2018, 4:40 AM

redpaw, so you just open each title before rendering? Or do you recache them too?

Martin L wrote on 11/5/2018, 4:41 AM

Dexcon, do you have this same issue in NB TP6 or is it gone there?

redpaw wrote on 11/5/2018, 4:49 AM

found that opening was enough... you can literally see how the text suddenly sharpens in the preview window. sometimes you need to open different title and go back to the original one to make it work.

wasn't aware of the 'recaching' option. will try next time.

@Martin L …. I can't recall having the disappearance issue with TP6 - and it's been installed now for exactly one year - though, as I mentioned earlier, I am now relying more on BCC Title Studio for most of my basic titling. Nonetheless, TP6 has thus not caused a problem when I have used it for more advanced titling than is available with BCC10's Title Studio (I haven't yet checked out BCC11). For example, I much prefer NBFX TP6's extrusion capabilities to that available in Title Studio 10.

Redpaw, interesting. I think TP has a default setting to recache the opened title once you close it. It can be deselected.

redpaw wrote on 11/5/2018, 5:21 AM

just checked and have 'enable cache for this title' and 'cache settings->render cache at close" selected for all titles, so doesnt look like that might an issue.

but in line with that thinking, just wondering if can vegas preference setting 'close media files when not the active application' might be causing the issue (i have it deselected)

@Dexcon I am having the disappearing titles problem in TP6 - also had it in TP5. It almost seems like a drive reading issue when opening a project.

Have you asked NB for support about that?

David Settlemoir wrote on 11/5/2018, 8:08 PM

I haven't. I've been doing more live work than editing and I forget to report it - but this thread made me remember!

set wrote on 11/6/2018, 4:39 PM

I usually skip the NBFX caching process, 'forcing' it to process in the final render.

As for disappearing issues, yeah, happening to me too. So, recently I have to save every title I've made, and recheck it before render... but, this is uncomfortable.

Is it due to 'shared design' feature and template, copy-paste but 'unshared it' to 'disconnect' ?

@redpaw thanks for the video example!

For the thread, the flicker/blur issue appears to be related to a caching. If you have any projects that consistently reproduce the issue, please email the .veg files to support@newblueinc.com so we can investigate. When do you typically run into the problem (after restarting VEGAS, restarting the system, etc)?

With regard to titles reverting to "Enter Text," in Titler Pro 5, the issue should be resolved in our latest updates for Titler Pro 6. For those of you experiencing the bug, please reach out to support@newblueinc.com so we can make sure it gets resolved for you.

Caleb, it would be much appreciated if you could clarify if the latest update referred to above is 6.0.180523, or is there another update on the way?

Cheers
