How can I capture video footage from a DVD? My dad took all of our old movies and converted them to VHS then to DVD. I now have the DVD and would like to pull small clips from it.
Do a search for VOB files. This topic has seen numerous posts in the forum.
The quickest way might be to take the analog output of the DVD and run it through you miniDV camcorder (most of which have an AV-DV converter to output digital video via firewire to your computer).
Alternatively, if you happen to have Ulead Movie Creator 3, it has a feature to edit existing files on a DVD. I use it just to pull the mp2 files off the DVD (it keeps the audio and video in the same file). It creates a temporary video file as it thinks you are going to use it to do the rest of the editing. So just go to the directory where those temp mp2 files are (while Movie Creator is still open) and grab the files into Vegas. Edit and save in Vegas, then exit Movie Creator without completing the process and it will erase those temp files.
There are also some DVD to AVI rippers on the market. My favorite, and the only one I've found that doesn't screw up the fluidity of the video, is the ImTOO DVD Ripper found here:
You'll also need a good quality DV codec. I use the Main Concepts one which cost me about $50 and is the best one out there. Actually the Vegas one is better, but you can't use it outside of Vegas. If you don't want to spend the $50, there is a free Panasonic one available if you look.
