Zipp, people keep trying to help you and you ain't listening. Its getting to be annoying when somebody brand new to Vegas keeps saying things don't work WHEN THEY DO if you only listen and clearly you're not.
You know what hover means in any Windows application? I'm gussing you don't. So LISTEN. Slowly move your mouse over the right top end of an event. If you pause your mouse without moving it for a second or two you'll see a quarter circle and a readout that says opacity ... %. If you hold down your left mouse button as you drag left you'll see the quarter circle pull left. The further you pull the longer the area defined that will have its opacity changed.
YOU LISTEN CHACHI! Mine (for some reason) doesn't work that way any longer. I know what you are talking about, heck I'm the one that mentioned the darn "fade offset/opacity" handles...it was in my initial question.
Very top right hand corner of an event - just hover the cursor over this "corner". I get a "quadrant". This tells me the off/set option is available.
Zippy, are you thinking like me, that your "copy" of Vegas is somehow faulty? If I were you, I'd be getting onto SoFo tech support, PRONTO, AND definately get in touch with their Customer Services. Hell man! You've been that patient with, for you, this worrysome software I WOULD have been on the phone to THEM day and night! What did you pay for it $300 > $400 > $500? Yeah? - I reckon a call to Customer Services would do the trick - yeah? So much money, and you're putting up with our fixes. Nah! Call SoFo, you've been patient enough.
They are very good people and would dearly love to hear from you. As you've proved here - I'm sure they won't "ignore this user", your feedback about the difficulties you're having will, IMHO, most likely assist the design of future releases. Now that's something you'd wanna do? Help us all to improve this software?
Zippy, could you tell me where you are up to with your previous posts? What success have you had? - You are a very patient man! I'd have been onto SoFo by now!

Grazie,
I reckon Zippy could easily get work as a paid beta tester, man if I thought I was having so many problems that weren't my fault I'd be getting something else.
Come to think of it if I had the money I'd buy him a G5 and FCP 4 just so we could all get a good nights sleep....
And then wake up to hear Apple's share price had plummeted 50% :)
Ah, c'mon farss, give the guy a break! He's only trying to make his way in the world. Not too much to ask? Eh? He's really TRYING to get it right. Heck, with all the troubles he's been getting, he's surely wanting to get an HANDLE on what is going on . . .well look at his postings.
As I say "Give the GUY a BREAK!" That's my advice . . . . .
I'm still waiting on his report on all his "posts". Now that should make some fine, fine reading . . .. .
Farss, you're the best,
Grazie
. . .. now where did I put my copy of "How to make friends and influence people" - know what I mean?
Let me see if I know what you'r esaying. You placed a transition on the clip. the fade handle disapeared. Now you want the handle to stay there AFTER you drop on the transation, right?
Also, if there is a handle, is it light blue, dark blue, or just a corner missing?
You've got to give the man that, maybe I have the advantage of hindsight (read old and decrepit), that and the risk of bursting an artery if I get too stressed.
I hope he doesn't think I was having a shot at him, as others have said though it would be really helpful to those trying to help him and to himself if he made the effort to keep us informed, even if I screw up at least out of courtesy to those who've helped me I'll let everyone know what's happened.
Most users here are good enough to put up a post to the effect of 'oh thanks that fixed it' or whatever so everyone isn't madly offering suggestions long after the problem has been fixed.
I had a similar problem the other night on an audio track, couldn't get the cursor to change to the quarter moon shape for the fadein/fadeout transistion.
Then I found my problem. I had used a FX plug (output gain) on the audio track. The quarter moon cursor was now located where the output gain line was, which in my case was halfway between the midpoint and maximum gain.
Anyway, this was on an audio track and not a video track, but could be something to look into on the video track if plugins are being used.
Grazie I, too, have posted many questions recently of which I have had so much help and I have tried to help with some of my offerings when I can but you have me a little worried that perhaps I have asked too much of late.
I wouldn't wantto hog this fantastic forum but it has helped me more than I can say!
This forum is becoming an enabler for zippos who dont try to figure things out before posting ,or are too lazy to read the manual , or too dense to listen to advise.
a little testing and experimenting on your own, goes a long way. So does a beginner program which teaches the basic operations of a program (video factory)
If the quarter pie icon does not appear when you get to the upper-right-hand corner:
1) Make the track taller
2) See if there is already a fade out and the point is now farther LEFT in the clip
3) See if you have reduced the opacity level and the point is now farther DOWN on the clip
4) Use a script to set the fade out (see the FadeOutOneSecond.js script below)
var evnt = FindSelectedEvent();
if (null == evnt)
throw "no selected event";
//Now set the one second fade in and fade out
evnt.FadeOut.Length = new Timecode(1000);
} catch (e) {
MessageBox.Show(e);
}
function FindSelectedEvent() : TrackEvent {
var trackEnum = new Enumerator(Vegas.Project.Tracks);
while (!trackEnum.atEnd()) {
var track : Track = Track(trackEnum.item());
var eventEnum = new Enumerator(track.Events);
while (!eventEnum.atEnd()) {
var evnt : TrackEvent = TrackEvent(eventEnum.item());
if (evnt.Selected) {
return evnt;
}
eventEnum.moveNext();
}
trackEnum.moveNext();
}
return null;
}
WHen I bought V3 I downloaded the manual, printed it and read it from cover to cover but it was a lot to absorb. I then downloaded the tutorial and relevant files and worked my way through that learning as I went.
Trouble is there is so much in Vegas, especially 4, that I often forget what I've read and refer to this forum. Personnaly I do try to search for answers myself first.
Being mostly unilingual except for the few phrases from various languages that everyone knows, I almost hesitate to ask what ***CHI means. Probably best I don't know.
Apropos of nothing, I offer the following...
I am tired of being a newbie, and would respectfully like to ask those who have graduated to higher levels of the "...bie" scale the following questions:
1. At what stage does one stop being a newbie?
2. What does one become AFTER being a newbie?
3. Can one fake being a higher "...bie" than one's assigned level?
4. Is the topmost level an "oldbie"?
As an entry level hobbyist, and a VF/Vegas greenhorn of some two years, I've asked a few of the dumbest questions ever, quite likely, and have ALWAYS found someone to help, with nary a condescending word. It's one of the best (if not THE BEST) forums I've ever been associated with.
I used to read the NY Times and the Globe and Mail online with coffee. Nowadays I follow those up with a stop in here to see what help, tips and great ideas Grazie, Chienworks, BillyBoy, THFriar, Jetdv, Farss, Mav and the boys are offering.
In fact, having filled a binder with tips and tricks from this forum, religiously copied, pasted and printed, I'm likely one of the best newbies there is anywhere. Now, if I could just overcome my newbie status and graduate to a .... "twobie"?...I might get up my confidence level and create a smash hit.
Rocky Mountain News:
Those are known as minced oaths, meaning they are milder forms of expressions that could be considered blasphemous. Pete is St. Peter, who is standing in for God, as in for God's sake. This expression first appeared in 1924, according to takeourword.com, joining for mercy's sake, which dates to the 16th century.
Geo Cities:
For the love of Pete:
Meaning: I am frustrated with this situation
Origin: This phrase and phrases like "for Pete's sake" are euphemisms for the phrases "for the love of God/Christ" or "for God's/ Christ's sake" and hail from a time when those phases were considered blasphemous. Nowadays phrases like "for the love of god" are commonly used, but the euphemisms are still used. Why Pete? Most likely it is a reference to the catholic Saint Peter.
These are fabulous pages! Go see them . . they are the "Dog's Wotzits!" Here's the Link:
