For the Vegas 8 Crash Test Dummies: RAM Preview

This post is for those out there who have shared my frustration in editing HDV in Vegas 8. I've had several projects that have been a nightmare where I have had enormous difficulties editing and rendering a finished product.

However, I just finished a 30 minute 1080i project shot in 30P on a V1U and to my immense delight I had no problems whatsoever. So I'm wondering whether this is because I'm working on a fresh install of Vista & Vegas or if it is due to the settings that I used. Since so many other people have had problems with Vista & Vegas it probably can't be machine-specific.

The only setting that I tweaked on this project is that I set my RAM Preview to 0. Initially Vegas was gobbling up tons of RAM so I just reduced it to 0 and then it stayed under 500mb in usage the rest of the time no matter what I was doing. Obviously this sucks b/c you don't have any RAM preview but I didn't have any crashes or performance issues after changing this.

Has anyone tried this tweak to see if it helps on your end with crashes?

Hi Michael,

A few years back, after upgrading to Vegas 7, I had all kinds of problems. Especially when rendering. Vegas would freeze, or take the OS down. I tried switching memory modules, and the symptoms would change. Tried all kinkds of memroy testing and they all tested OK. No other aps had problems. Finally bought some expensive memory from Corsair. All the problems suddenly went away. Now, I use only memory from Corsair or Kingston (and drives only from Segate), and everything works much better.
