Forum becoming adversarial

Former user wrote on 9/28/2014, 7:35 PM
I admit I might have been guilty recently in challenging some other forum users claims, but with some of the current postings, I find this forum becoming too adversarial for my tastes.

I previously signed off for a while, and I am going to do that again.

I wish you all the best in your personal and professional pursuits and might return when the atmosphere changes.

+1 in all respects.

but why sign off, it's so simple to just IGNORE that which you don't like. it's like cutting your nose off to spite your face*

+ 1, sad to see, hope it passes.

The most offensive thread has been deleted, Dave.
I reported it Friday night. I posted some comments after having done so.

That said, some of your very best posts are ones that were seen by only a few, because you deleted them yourself.

The "Bash Bob" thread remains, but he seems to be doing an admirable job of handling himself with the troll attacks.

I'm hopeful your absence will be brief.
This aberration may be seasonal in origin, at least partially.

Best, Mark

No matter how strange things have gotten here recently, I find the Creative Cow forums to be much worse. Could just be my perspective. The Vegas forum has been pretty good about self regulating, for the most part we're mature adults and act that way.

knowing bob personally i not only highly respect his (well researched) opinions, his ability to admit to being wrong, but his ability to tango, flamenco, watusi, and not to forget, his limboing well beneath the bar ;-)
riredale wrote on 9/28/2014, 10:29 PM
I've been posting here ever since getting involved with Vegas3 back in 2002, and from time to time there's been a bit of friction. In my view the worst was back a half-dozen years ago when some folks began harping on politics and religion, both "third rail" topics in polite company. I saw the most recent thread about color correction but had no idea what it was about and moved on.

There will always be clashes from time to time but in general I think this is a pretty-well-behaved bunch of videographers, especially when compared to the foul-mouthed and immature types that comment on numerous other sites. So I'd encourage you not to go away.

Rory, your last thread spewing your opinion about the "posers" on the forum got deleted, that should have been a clue not to bring it up again. Your opinion has already been noted and dismissed, now give it a rest.

"knowing bob personally i not only highly respect his (well researched) opinions, his ability to admit to being wrong, but his ability to tango, flamenco, watusi, and not to forget, his limboing well beneath the bar ;-)"

Not just "beneath the bar" but flat on my back on the floor :(

Bob.

My impression of the Creative Cow Forum (years ago) was that if you didn't have 100 thousand dollars in your system you were treated like dirt.

Just mentioning any product with "Wonder" in its' name gets you moderated.
larry-peter wrote on 9/29/2014, 11:39 AM
I think the forum is fine. The self-moderating aspect is one of the reasons I like this forum so much. Other forums with their, "shut up and let the experts talk" tone does very little to inspire new mentors to arise.

I think anyone who visits this forum a few times immediately recognizes the handful of experienced mentors. Allowing all to offer advice from wherever they are in their careers helps grow a new generation of "experts."

For that to occur in a healthy way I think we have to be able to allow ourselves, and others to be wrong occasionally. Beating each other over the head with personal beliefs doesn't accomplish much. I would much rather be wrong than stupid.

Edit: the censored word was an antonym for "smart."

I always love people that run around calling others posers. Its like they have some deep seated internal issues that they are not dealing with. If you use vegas to edit video, output, and then display that video somewhere. You are pretty much a video editor at that point. The only difference is artistic talent and technical skill level. God knows we all have our opinions on what good art is. If the person throwing the poser label about would like to post some samples, I would watch them and prepare to be schooled by them.
DrLumen wrote on 9/29/2014, 3:42 PM
Dave, I would echo that you should not leave based on the recent or past conditions. I too feel a little responsible for the current climate. I don't know what all happened during one of the recently deleted threads but it appears it blew up after I last saw it. I likely had a hand in lighting the fuse...

However, I do now know whom to avoid. I wish I had known that earlier. When someone posts some conspiracy theory (a belief) and is acting like a lightning rod, I can't always help myself. To re-iterate, that won't happen again.

I'll go back to strictly monitoring more within the next few days as I too am a "poser" and apparently not worthy of posting here. The only reason I even peek in is to see what has changed in the newer versions of Vegas, Acid and the long dead Cinescore. Little did I know I would find a baited trap that I put my name on...

I'm not exactly sure if I'm a Poser or not. I don't work on big-budget projects for James Cameron and I don't live in Burbank. I do make pretty good DVDs for people who then pay me money. And I'd like to think I know quite a bit about video based on my earlier career in HDTV.

And I very much like the notion of this Board being kind of like a social pub. Years ago it was a lot of fun after a day's work in Silicon Valley retiring to the local "pub" where I was surrounded by brilliant engineers and businessmen, all having a good time and trying to figure out where the future was. The folks here at this board are literally from all over the world. They seem to enjoy the nerdy and artistic aspects of creating moving pictures with sound that tell a story. Few probably work for big bucks for a production crew in Hollywood. That's okay.

Anyway, that's my two cent's worth.

I'm all for a separate "Posers, wannabes, and old farts" section, where we could carry on much as we did before all this toxicity started.
John_Cline wrote on 9/29/2014, 6:51 PM
Maybe we just need to start a section for people with the same attitude as Rory, but they would probably get pretty lonely.

"I'm not exactly sure if I'm a Poser or not."
I'm sure you are in a few eyes, and not in others, so who cares? It's what you think that counts.

Wish more people understood this.
ushere wrote on 9/29/2014, 8:15 PM
on some of the other forums users have 'titles', eg, moderator, newbie, regular, etc.,

perhaps we could do the same here?

i would be: pompous old fart / has been

musicvid10 wrote on 9/29/2014, 8:21 PM
and me, pompous old fart / poser
John_Cline wrote on 9/29/2014, 8:28 PM
The titles earned on the other forums are almost always based on the number of posts from a particular user, that wouldn't be of much use here where quality is more valuable than quantity.
GeeBax wrote on 9/29/2014, 8:47 PM
I do not see anything to be gained from 'classifying' people into any category, it serves no purpose. And anyone who attempts to do so is ignoring the main purpose of this forum, that is to encourage people with knowledge of the product to help and guide those who are still learning.

On that basis, I could not care what Rory thinks of myself or anyone else and I find his comments offensive and sad.

I was fortunate to be a pioneer in this game where I come from. I am now semi-retired, and do not feel any need to prove to anyone on this forum my 'professional' abilities. And I am certain there are many others here in similar circumstances.
