Forum Change?

TomG wrote on 7/29/2004, 12:36 PM
When did this change? Used to be that you could click on a "posted by" thread and get all the posts from that particular user id. I liked that you could also get the full name of the user if the user wanted it displayed (I think) from the account information. I now discover that the name or web address does not appear any longer. Guess it's a privacy issue? Anyone else notice this?

I just noticed it a few hours ago myself--I was surprised. You still see their posts, but not their contact info.

One of the reasons it was OK to use a "handle" was because your identify was still known (made for more responsible posting). You could also post your Web URL so folks go find out more (if you chose to do so).

I do not believe this change is for the better. Sony should provide the option if we don't care to have our information posted.

If Sony people are doing stuff on the forum, can they please please PLEASE add he ability to show more than 10 threads per page, and show an entire thread on one page (a la creativecow...)

This is one of the more annoying forums I've used (I should know, I wrote one :)) ... I stick with it cos of the wealth of information around here though... :\
MJhig wrote on 7/29/2004, 4:34 PM
Ummm, it goes up to 100, click Edit Account above.

Chienworks wrote on 7/29/2004, 5:30 PM
Yep. I've got it set to display 50 threads per page and unthreaded view for each topic. Much nicer that way!

The only thing i miss in nonthreaded view is that sometimes it's hard to tell who is responding to whom. *shrug* Not a really huge issue though.

Nope, especially because most quote what they are replying to. I have it set to 100 non threaded. I like this forum's format better than the vast majority of forums.

Thanks :8)

re: How long's THAT been there?

It's been there at least as long as I have been posting (2001).

The code for this forum is written and maintained by the now Sony people. I suppose the same people make the software that brings us together. They are proud of this forum. And even though it lacks some of the bells and whistles we might have seen in other forums, it is admirably stable, and it does what it does well.
I have posted a bit over the years, and sometimes I loose track of what threads I'm "on". When someone replies after some days, I may not pick up on it. I rather wish there was a system that would help me keep track of the threads I single out.
Minor gripe that. Over all, I think the forum is great - both form and content. Even a few of the flames are high quality.

The thread got off track. I would still like to know why Sony killed the ability to find out more about the person who posted (full name, website).

If it was allowed during the registration, and then entered by the user, why has it now been hidden? Could they add an option to opt in our out (although you don't have to enter this information correctly if you choose not). I've had several off-line conversations with folks from the forum via their website URL and subsequent e-mail.

Previously, if I was trying to find a user's site I could just find the person, click on their name and find their site again. Now this capability is gone--unless the person has referenced his site online.

Can we form a cohesive lobby to reinstate this, or is it a non-issue?

It's a pain, because it's assumed that if someone "wants to explore you further," they can without you throwing your URL around all the time. Not to mention that most of us go by handles, and only know each others' REAL names because we've cared enough to do the digging...

If this was deliberate, it's BS. I use it all the time to dig around on others and see what they do; what they're up to. I've actually contacted people privately about jobs for them with this information.

the one thing I really like about this forum is that it is more than a user-to-user forum --- it's a genuine community. If Sony wants to ditch certain posts, that's their prerogative. If I decide to allow my name to be seen, that's MY prerogative. We DO have the option of keeping it to ourselves. Sony shouldn't be deciding that for us...

Anybody asked "WHY?" Sony has done this directly of Sony? Seems like the most obvious thing to do. Anybody done this? If not - how come?

"...don't you miss Zippy? ; ) "

No.
And try getting the latest firmware for your toaster oven. This has been addressed before, do a search, and don't stop til you find the thread.

Re: the e-mail being made public... As long as it's voluntary.
I had to switch my e-mail address to a bogus one a few years ago because someone sent me an e-mail asking for my serial number.

NO!

But I do miss seeing the personal information like name and url if people choose to display it. SONY, Please, please, please, add it back. It's so impersonal this way. Plus we can't find each others web site now. This is definitely a step in the wrong direction. Please give us the choice to share.

Well, I guess I'm not alone in missing this feature (which is why I asked in the first place)...

I did send a request to Sony to reinstate the feature referencing this thread.

Thanks,

TomG

PS. NO, I DON'T MISS ZIPPYGAWHO?
Stonefield wrote on 7/31/2004, 11:57 AM
I'd like to add my vote for the personal website link as well. I've got some new new model movies coming up in the future I'd like to show and it would be nice to have this feature reinstated.

I'm with Chanimal and Jay - the easier it is to contact someone on the forum, the better.
Anyone who doesn't want to be "known" should be able to opt out.
