frame back space

I edit video using Vegas 4 as follows:-
1) play tape
2) put on pause
3) advance tape frame by frame
4) Capture Image for a frame grab that I want.
I can still advance the tape frame by frame as normal (using the step forward icon) but I am now unable to rewind the tape more than one frame at a time, as I used to be able to using the 'step back' icon. when I try to rewind 2 or more frames in succession, the 'step back' box is blanked out after the first click and only seems to be reactivated by clicking on the 'pause' icon again. Then the 'step back' is made available again, but only for one frame. Very frustrating. Has anyone any idea what's going on?

What I would do is capture the video clip as a file, then grab stills in Vegas from the video file, then delete the video file (if desired). This will eliminate all the device control headaches- plus you'll be able to color correct, deinterlace etc prior to saving out the stills.

Thanks very much for the reply and advice. My problem is, I take literally hundreds of frame grab stills to be used later in slideshows that consist exclusively of stills. (I film in progressive scan mode so don't need to deinterlace and don't have time to colour correct or apply any other manipulation to the stills - if they don't work as they are, then I don't grab them). So far, Vegas 4 has worked well for me, I just don't understand why going back frames has become so combersome. I can live with the problem, if I have to, as it only applies to 'back frame' but I'd love to know why it's happening.

If this is a problem that you didin't have before, but has just started happening, you could try re-setting all of the Vegas settings to factory default. To do this, you press Ctrl-Shift when starting Vegas. Be aware, however, that you cannot go back to your earlier settings, and that ALL settings will be reset (things like location of files, etc. that you probably set months ago and forgot about). Despite this downside, this often "fixes" problems that suddenly show up.

Yes, thanks - I'll give it a go (but try to track down my amended settings first (I know what you mean about setting them and forgetting them!))
