Frame by Frame Audio

I want to synchronize 4 cameras without a time stamp. I am using a snare hit for synchronizing for a concert I filmed. I was using Edius which you can hear the audio while doing a frame by frame search. But Eduis does not have a 5.1 Surround Sound Monitor like Vegas has. In Vegas I cannot hear audio while doing a frame by frame search for synchronizing. Does Vegas have this feature? Is there something in preferences that needs to be checked?

Press 1 or 3 on the numeric keypad to nudge an event(s) by frame. However, you can move the audio events down to the sample level. Typically 48,000 per second... a lot more precise than by frame... about 30fps.
You can drag event(s) or nudge it by increments. The amount of movement is determined by how far the timeline is zoomed in or out. To nudge an event, click the event and press 4 or 6 on the numeric keypad to move it by small increments.
The audio will also likely drift if the recording devices were not genlocked.

Thank you. But can you hear the audio while doing this?

No, it's not a playback or scrub function.

Thank you.

I usually set a loop region a few seconds long around the point i'm currently working on and let Vegas play this continuously while i'm nudging the secondary audio event left & right. It's pretty easy to hear when they "click" into sync.

Good tip Kelly!

I will try that. Thanks for the tip.

Also, I am using Sonar 3X for mixing in 5.1. If I have Vegas and Sonar open at the same time Vegas knocks out my Behringer FCA610 Audio Interface Drivers in Sonar. Sonar has a preference you can check to Share Drivers with other Programs. I cannot find it in Vegas. Is there such a setting in Vegas?

Don't think so. The Sony apps can both have the same device 'open', but not simultaneously actively use it. I understood that was a limitation of ASIO drivers themselves. Maybe Cakewalk has a work-around.

But curious as to why not do your 5.1 mixing in Vegas ?

In Vegas' preferences, on the General tab:

Close audio and MIDI ports when the the active application

Will release the audio drivers in use when you switch away from Vegas, and Vegas is not actively playing.

The 5.1 mix was done in Sonar before I purchased Vegas. I was using Edius as my Video editor and found out I could not monitor my 5.1 mix. Edius still uses WDM drivers with no plans of issuing the software with ASIO drivers.

So I purchased Vegas as my Video editor and I am just starting to learn how to use it.

I am working with an hour and a half concert film. It is a pretty intense mix with lots of stuff going on. I am very comfortable mixing in Sonar and you can export to a Sony 64 bit wave file when done. But I will take a look at Vegas's audio side in the future.

Thank you. I thought maybe both programs had to be set to 5.1 when they were both active. I had Vegas set at stereo and Sonar set to 5.1 surround and Vegas kept knocking out my audio drivers in Sonar. When I changed Vegas to a 5.1 project file it let the audio drivers in Sonar keep working.

Maybe that was false. I will try again today. Thanks again for the tip.

You will have better luck syncing your audio tracks with Pluraleyes.

I checked that product out. Looks pretty cool. I will download the trial version and see. This will save a lot of time if it works.

Thanks for the tip.

There is a learning curve; post back with samples and questions.
