Frame Recompressed and Fast CPUs

With my humble computer ( PIII 933 ) any video other than DV I preview thru the external monitor ( wmv, mov, mpeg ) has a slight stuttering as the frames are being recompressed.

I'm curious, when I upgrade ( to P4 3.2 - Gig o'Ram ) will that frame recompression be smoother because of the much faster CPU ? Will the movs, mpegs, etc be smoother ?

That is to be expected. It will definitely improve with a faster CPU... but it will likely never be the same as previewing out DV AVI files.

Hey, I get slight stuttering with just a DV AVI when I output it through the preview external monitor out via IEEE 1394. Are there some settings that I can change to improve this?

If it's just a straight DV AVI file then the internal preview window will go black. If the window says "Frame Recompressed" then it isn't just a DV-AVI file, and may have some process being added.

Maybe that was all too obvious, maybe not. What does your preview window look like?

I get the red lettered FRAME RECOMPRESSED message on my Vegas preview monitor when I'm playing DV-Avi s just as it should be. I was just wondering how much faster a 3 gighertz CPU can recompress those quicktime and mpeg files to view on my external monitor. As it stands now, I can get some not too bad speeds. But I'm sure that'll look better with the faster CPU. More ram also means larger ram previews as well, very nice.

Sorry. It was your thread but my question was for FrigidND.

But I'll get to the point of the question because it applies anyone. If you are playing back a raw stretch of DV media then there shouldn't be any recompression at all-as long as you have the preview size set to any variation of Full. If it's set to Auto and the preview window pane is small then you get recompression even though it's not being played in the preview pane.

As for mpeg or MOV recompression, sure it'll be faster if you get a faster CPU. How much faster? Beats me. My fastest system if a 2 GHz P4 northwood.
