You can only add actual media files to the Media Pool. When editing on the timeline (e.g. splitting a long event into smaller pieces), it is only when you render (“make movie”) that you create a new media file. So, if you want to take a large clip and break it up into 10 smaller files, you would need to render each of these pieces separately.

That would only be useful if you wanted to use the same clips in multiple videos.

If you are editing a single video from your Digital 8 tape, then just do everything on the timeline, and render your single movie when done.
