Frustrated with the project properties and stretch

rickharp wrote on 3/10/2010, 1:26 PM
For this project I selected the standard NTSC DV (720x480, 29.970 fps) that uses 0.9091 (NTSC DV) pixel aspect ratio. but my display is 655x480. I desire to keep aspect ratio so as to not distort circles and such. But I don't really get to see the spaces on the left and right till i render, and I really want the rendering to be full screen, but am not committed to 720 x 480. As of right now, this date, this video

about 20 seconds into it, it shows the spaces on the side because those clips have yes to stretch.

and here is my screen shot... http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?inmnhd1h0gj

screen shot of rendered video

Maybe I should re submit my question as what are good settings to maintain aspect ration and make it display how it will render.

I am sure there is a good thread on this, if you recall, please pass it along. Thanks in advance.

I just read this thread comment, and it definetly helped.

Your Project Properties should be set exactly the same as your source media. You do this by clicking on the folder icon in the Project Properties dialog and choosing one of your source media files.

The Project Properties are in no way dependent on your desired Render Properties. Set them for the output format you choose and leave the Project Properties as they are.

Project Properties affect the Preview. Render Properties affect the output. If you "should" choose to change your Project Properties pre-emptively to emulate the output, you do so at the the sacrifice of preview performance.

Right-click onto the preview window and select "Simulate Device Aspect Ratio".

All good advice, but the clips with the black sidebars are already in their correct 4:3 aspect ratio. I checked it in Photoshop.

The problem is that his output format is 600 x 400, which is a 3:2 screen aspect, and which is wider than the native video.

To fill the 3:2 screen, check the box in render properties that says "Stretch video to fill output."

As can be seen from the opening clip which has apparently been stretched in this manner, the result is not objectionable.

Or, the OP could just output to a 4:3 screen aspect (640x480 for instance) and avoid the behavior altogether.
