Frustrating

I have been a Vegas fan since version 3 - upgraded to every new version and been real happy. But version 9 has been soooo frustrating. Tonight, I needed to send a copy of a recent close to a show I had done and since the receipient is a MacNut, I figured I should send it in QT format. I rendered it about 5 times in QT in every format I could think of and ended up with a black screen everytime. So, I tried Windows Media format, and only the high quality format would render without a black screen but it was 38 mb and too big to email. So, I finally decided to render as an mpg file but it too rendered as a black screen and no audio.

Finally, I found an AVI version of the video and opened it in Vegas 8b, rendered it as a QT file the way I orginally wanted to and guess what...all was fine!

Even more frustrating, after about 5 tries as a QT file in Vegas 9, Vegas kept telling me the file was in use by another program and refused to render the QT file at all. As I said...very frustrating.

Open Project Media tab and hit the lightning bolt icon. This catches me out all the time and is frustrating. Aside from that I'm with you. A few days back I finally upgraded from V8.0b to V8.0c.

V9.0 is installed and I've done a few jobs with it, I like where it seems to be headed but there's nothing in it that compels me to jump ship from V8 to V9.

I would have tried rendering to the AVC codec although I don't see why you'd not simply upload your video to YouTube and email a password to your client. Once they're done delete the video from YouTube.

Despite all the initial glowing reviews in this forum, V9 is pretty clearly a heavily flawed release, even after two updates.

I just went back and looked at the feature list and I would think that for a lot of people V8, or even V7 would do the job just fine. My advice is to edit in V7.0d, which is rock-solid, and then render in 8.0c. If you do AVCHD (which 7.0d doesn't handle), then use 8.0c to render to an intermediate.

I have a little sense for what 9.x must be like when I got my new computer and spent a LOT of money to dual boot to Vista 64 so I could run 8.1. That program, which I think is a precursor to much of the code in 9.x, initially felt great, but then when I tried to render to MPEG-2 and ended up with random totally black video sections I quickly gave up. I mailed to Madison a DVD with all the project files to Sony could duplicate the problem, but it is not clear whether they ever dealt with it. In the past, they were VERY good at dealing with big issues like this.

So, I can pretty much guarantee an end to your frustrations if you just forget completely about 9.x and instead use 7.0d and 8.0c, in the manner I just described.

I went from standard def and Vegas 7 to HiDef and Vegas 9. I really wish I'd have just gone to ver 8.0 and waited for ten.....

I went from no problems to more than I can fix (seemingly).

I'd suggest sending a polite email to SCS pointing out your position and asking for a V8 serial number. I don't even know if they're in a position to grant your request however the customer service guys are very helpfull.

Bob - I still have V8b on my computer and have had no problems with it but 9 is really pushing me. I think I'll email Madison and while I don't expect it to be fixed, I still have 7 and 8 - both working fine.

I made a number of Blu-ray disks using AVC under V8. Everything went great. After "upgrading" to V9 AVC files are no longer accepted by DVDA without recompression. So I have to use intermediate files to transfer my projects to V8 for AVC rendering only.

I did file a bug report with SCS 2 months ago and they confirmed they can reproduce the error (bug in DVDA or V9?). However, there is no estimate when this bug will be corrected. Maybe they're too busy releasing new software.

Let's see--It was just yesterday the veins were popping out of my forehead again as I battled yet another bug in Vegas 9/DVDA. I don't think I've ever had as many issues with a professional software package that directly affect my intended workflow. If V9 was a first release of a new product, I'd find it more forgivable, but the QC issues definitely have me wondering if Sony is serious about maintaining this as professional-grade software. Which is a shame, because it is otherwise a fantastic tool.
