Undock the preview window, stick it anywhere you like (ideally on a second monitor), grab a corner, and stretch it out to any size you like (normal window resizing paradgim).

full screen preview would be nice though, although obviously CPU speed dependant for quality.

What I don't understand is how come one can't use the secondary monitor as an "external monitor" like you could with a DV camcorder.

I've got quad-head going on right now with an 2 dualhead cards (AGP and PCI) installed. The 4th display using the TV-out. Surely I'm not the only one using TV-out with Vegas who would love to see it used as an external monitor?

How the preview window behaves depends on whether you choose a quality setting in the preview quality drop down followed by "full" or "auto" (the button at the top of the preview window). In auto it will automatically adjust the display size as you enlarge the window. Choose full and it will show at 720x480. If you don't have the window large enough, it will still show full size and just crop what doesn't fit. This is nice for when you want a closer look at the video while applying touch up FX, you can leave the window small so it does not compete for space with the plug-in windows while still having a tighter view of the video.
