Fundamental Editing Question

sean@oregonsound.com wrote on 6/17/2007, 10:31 AM
Is there a way to easily swap a region in the timeline with a different region from the media bin, maintaining whatever effects/transitions, etc. had already been added to the region to be replaced? This has come up for me frequently and I have been unable to find a way to do it though this seems a pretty basic action. If it isn't possible, is there a way to copy applied effects/transitions from one region in the timeline to another? Thanks.

You can copy the effects and such from one audio/video clip to another by selecting "copy", then on the other clip select "Paste Event Attributes".

I think this is what you're asking for.

Edit: You can also select a bunch of other clips at once by holding CTRL or Shift while clicking, then selecting "PEA".

In addition, you can add footage from the trimmer to an existing event as a "take".

Search help for Takes.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check those out. So, there's no way to simply select a region in the timeline and replace it with a selection from the media bin?

Could you clarify the question - a region in the timeline might be say 20 tracks. A selection in the media bin would presumably be a single media clip. How would you decide what to replace with what?

Sorry, guess I use too many programs and am mixing up my terminology. By "region" I actually am referring to a single clip on a single track. I.e., I have a video or still picture event to which I have applied transitional effects or similar, and now I'd like to see how those same effects would look using an alternate clip of video or still picture in the same spot in the timeline.

There is probably an easier way but I never bothered to look for it. In any case...

Minimize Vegas (so your media goes "off line").
Bring up Windows Explorer (if necessary).
Rename your clip to something else.
Maximize Vegas and get the message "Media not found".
Indicate the new media to use.

We've used this method for updating a project with changes we know need to be made, but it's way too much hassle for simple comparison. In SAWStudio, for example, if you want to replace a region of audio on a track in the timeline, you simply select another region from the region list and hit Shift-R, and the new audio is now in the timeline with all effects and automation that may have been applied to the replaced region still intact. I realize it's fruitless to compare programs this way, but I would think that video editors (which I am not) would regularly need to have this type of functionality for experimentation. That's why I'm surprised Vegas doesn't have a similar option.

Sean,

Takes is exactly the feature you want to use because it's made specifically for this. Look in Help or read the manual. It's not at all difficult.

Yes, yes, yes, that's the ticket! It maintains all applied effects to each take, and can be easily added to an existing take---actually a very powerful layer feature that raises Vegas in my estimation. All is well with the world. Thanks!
