Have not heard much about this cam since the introduciton. Has anyone used one? I'm needing a new cam and this one looks good, but i don't want to be the first guy on the block to buy one. JM
I have one in my hands even as I type.
Great cam, but frankly, I can't see owning one if the V1 is at not a whole lot more money. V1 has progressive scan, FX7 does not.
V1 has pro audio, FX7 does not. but, if cost is a sole factor...the FX7 is quite nice too. There are a lot of diffs.
Hey Spot. Any initial impressions about how the FX7 compares to its predecessor, the FX1? Just on the surface it doesn't seem like a huge upgrade. I'm sure the CMOS chips look great though.
I don't feel it's a *huge* upgrade, although the CMOS offers some smoother images, at a cost of less light sensitivity. The gap between the Z1 and the V1 is pretty definable, but the gap between the FX1 and FX7 less so, IMO. I hadn't touched an FX7 til arrival in Australia, and have only had it for 3 days. But features are features, and that is readily commented on.
One thing I do like about the FX7 is the smaller form factor, lighter weight, seriously longer battery life.
The only reason I can see going with the FX7 is the camcorder trade-up program Sony is running on the Sony Style website. I have 2 camcorders that could be traded in, but the V1 isn't on that site because it's a consumer cam.
Using the FX1 myself, I would be intrigued to see how well the FX7 does in low light. I use the FX1 in a lot of dimly lit interior shots, as well as outdoor night shots, and I've always been impressed by the quality and vibrancy it gets in those situations.
The one advantage (if you can call it that) to Sony's dominance in low light in their prosumer cams has been the 12x lens. The VX2000, VX2100 and FX1 all have a 12x lens. The FX7 has a 20x lens, and the lux has been rated at 4. Not bad, but not great in low light.
The original VX1000 also had a 20x lens, and it too wasn't good in low light.
