FX overloading

With the discussion around red light (hmmm), I decided to check it out.

Here is what I did.

1 - Recorded a 1kHz stereo tone, added it to a track in Vegas 4, and normalized it to 0dB.
2 – Used a track FX chain with Sonic Track EQ, Sonic Parametric EQ, Ultrafunk Equalizer R3, Waves Q4 Parametric Equalizer, Ozone 2 (only equalizer) and Sonic Graphic Dynamic as the last.
3 - Turned all equalizers off, and preset them to a 15dB boost at 1kHz.
4 - Turned Dynamic on with default parameters (straight through)
5 – Started Vegas and checked the output on a spectrum analyzer with harmonic distortion below 95dB.
5 – Turned the first equalizer on and lowered the Master volume to -1dB below clipping.
6 – One by one I checked the distortion for each equalizer, and only saw minor changes in harmonic distortion, which I believe is inaudible.

As you can see, all used FXs handled 15dB overloading without any problems.

Then I tried the same in Sound Forge 6, and instead of the none existence Master volume I used the Output Gain in the Graphic Dynamic.

The result was the same with '24bit (IEEE float)' or '64bit (IEEE float)' processing. If switched to 8, 16 or 32 processing the signal became completely distorted. The processing can be checked in the lower right corner of the FX chain window, and changed by right clicking on it.
