FX plugin location on hard disk for Vegas Pro 16.0 and Vegas Pro 18.0

ZoltanG-Zeisky wrote on 10/1/2020, 7:14 AM

I have an issue where my FX are installed, but I don't know the location on the disk, since I have Vegas 16 and Vegas 18, but the newer effects show up on Vegas 16 but not on 18! How do I locate them and make Vegas 18 see the new FX, just like on the older version?? To be specific, an FX which is called 'Witness Protection' was placed on a project created in Vegas Pro 16.0 .. when the SAME project is opened in Vegas Pro 18.0 it states that THAT effect is not available or found! How is it that a NEW FX package which was downloaded with the newer Vegas Pro 18.0 Suite bundle is available in an earlier Vegas but not on the newer version?? Thanks.

Generally speaking, OFX FX for Vegas are installed in c:Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins and all versions of Vegas automatically look there. If a plugin is properly installed and a version of Vegas is not seeing it, try clearing the cache in the version that does not see it. There are multiple ways to do this. An easy way is to hold down CTRL-SHIFT while starting Vegas and then checking the "clear cache" box in the window that opens. This will reset Vegas back to factory settings too so any preference changes you have made will need to be made again.

Jetdv,

Tried your CTRL-SHIFT while starting Vegas 18 .. did not get any window to 'clear cache' ... started as usual.

Went to C:/Program Files/VEGAS/Vegas Pro 15 and Vegas Pro 18 folders and looked at both folders named: OFX Video plugins .. and both had DIFFERENT folders for effects.. copied all of the effects to BOTH folders so they were IDENTICAL .. started Vegas Pro 18 .. still will not recognize previous plug-in even though it shows in those folders.Reinstalled the HitFilms plug-in software .. still same .. shows in Vegas 16. not in Vegas 18. Is there a CFG. file somewhere that can be changed or directed to the proper FX folders??

Unfortunately those older versions of Hitfilms plugins are not gonna be available in Vegas Pro 18, they are not compatible. To get your hitfilm/ignite plugins to show up in the newer versions of Vegas, you have to use there updated version which is version 4.1 https://fxhome.com/ignite-pro/whats-new

Evidently there is not upgrade to HitFilms ..only a NEW version which they want one to purchase.

My understanding is that any plugin is made for that particular version of Vegas and not guaranteed to work with future versions. If it does (most NBFX do), that's just a bonus, not a requirement.

Well that might be true, but does that mean that all my previous purchases of VEGAS has to be kept on my computer just so I can use the EFFECTS that came with that version? Any new upgrades are not capable of recognizing the previous versions' FX and the only FX available to the NEW version are the one that came with THAT version? Seems a bit strange and redundant to keep so many previous versions especially if I want to edit a previous project in the newer version of VEGAS. I can understand not being able to OPEN a new project in the newer version in an older version of VEGAS but not the other way around!

It is one of the ways the makers of those 3th party plugins give away a few for a certain version of Vegas to make their money.
Only now and than it is possible also to copy an effect from an early version to the newer one.
That's the reason I don't use them because with a little effort you can do the same with Vegas own FX and make presets for them.

I don't write the rules, just know what is in place. IF you do not have the fx in a current version of VP, how do you expect it to open up that fx from a past version? The fx that created it would be needed in both instances, not just the previous. You can open the project, the fx won't be there. Not a fault of Vegas since they didn't write the fx software.

Your "beef" is with the FX makers not Vegas.

My "beef" was if I have say, Boris/Sapphire FX in versions previous to VP17 Suite, but install the "new" BorisFX/Sapphire that came with VP17 Suite, it will nullify the past BorisFX/Sapphire in previous versions of VP since it effectively overwrites with the 'new' version of BorisFX and there is no serial number for the new 'upgraded' version. The old serial number will not work.

I got past versions of Sapphire working in VP17 Suite just by reinstalling them by running the installation download for those versions. Eventually, I bought BorisFX Continuum Complete. No more issues in the future.
