Game Civilization 4 offers great sound bank

Serious video editors pay attention to sound as well, in post production. The problem is often finding the right sound online or elsewhere. I just discovered that the pc strategy game entitled Civilization 4 (2K Games) installs a treasure throve of wav files on your pc that Vegas instantly recognizes. As the game covers pretty much all of civilization, the wav files are extremely diverse: the probably unuseful dying horse and various dying soldiers, the usable foot in mud (8 varieties), foot in snow (8 varieties), cows mooing (7 varieties), ambient sounds for hospitals, airports, hindu temples...
The list is extremely long and very varied.
(The game costs $5 and is actually a very positively reviewed game in itself.) The game runs on XP and Vista.

Fine for personal projects, but be aware that ALL sounds published on any such media are subject to copyright law and by using them on your own projects you are in breach of copyright. Unless you get specific permission to use them or you source them from royalty free libraries you could be liable to legal action if caught.

You're right, depending on where you live.
But other Vimeo users don't seem to care about copyright at all. Sigur Ross must be the most used music on Vimeo. It is copyright.

Just because people don't care doesn't mean it's legal!!

Sites like vimeo are a grey area. It is illegal to use copyright material in such a manner and the copyright holders would be perfectly entitled to ask you to remove the work in question. However that would generate a lot of bad publicity for them and seeing as the majority of people posting won't be making any money out of their work and the amount of time it would take to monitor such sites they don't tend to bother. If you were making money out of work that used copyrighted material in this way they would look at that much more seriously - if they found out about it!

For the record I have used copyrighted material in work I've produced - music & video. I just people need to be more aware of copyright law so they know the possible risks of using such material before they use it. Not knowing isn't an excuse in the eyes of the law.
