"Game time"-Style time code: no hours, but minutes 60 and above

ColdWeather wrote on 9/20/2021, 3:55 AM

Hello,

there is a timecode FX inserting display of timecode in various formats (time, frames, etc...). Regarding the time, it shows all durations longer than 1 hour naturally like 01:05:00,333. I need a "game time" timecode, for instance, like shown during a soccer match: "74:56". In other words, minutes above 59 and seconds without hours. Any idea how to implement?

@ColdWeather, sorry, there is no timecode format that does that. All I can offer is a workaround.

  1. Add the Timecode plug-in and set the Timecode format to Time & Frames
  2. Add a Bezier Masking FX
  3. Set the Mask Type to Curve for Mask 1
  4. You might want to raise the Blend level in the General options so you can see your image as you create your mask
  5. Create a mask area that indcludes just the minutes and seconds and excludes hours and frames
  6. Deselect the Edit Mode checkbox
  7. (Set your blend amount back to 0.000)
  8. In the General options of the Bezier Masking tool, select the Mask FX checkbox to limit the mask to just the timecode effect

Thank you, @gary-rebholz. I make it approximately the way you described, masking extra positions of hours and frames out in my video reports of soccer matches (my son plays), but for the second half of a match after 60 minutes I extend the mask (by setting a key frame in the mask animation) and have to show HH:MM:SS instead of MM:SS like 89:59 😀. I think, it's a good idea for Vegas developers to add such a kind of Timecode format. I'm not familiar with scripting under Vegas yet; may be there is a way to create this special kind of Timecode design by means of the script.

@ColdWeather

I haven't found that Timecode setting you want in any of the editing software I know (Vegas, Premiere and Resolve). But it's possible to do what you want with a little creativity and patience.

@gary-rebholz suggestion works, but as you've noticed, the timecode effect will be limited to 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

Try this procedure from my screen recording.

If you have the Vegasaur extension, you can use the Create Counter feature to create your custom timecode. https://vegasaur.com/

Good lucky!

I was not the first with an idea/need to have a soccer clock. Directly found:
