Gearshift, good grief what did I do wrong

OK, I've been getting into HDV for the last several months. I have a Canon XHA1, so I had to get HDVsplit, which works great, no problems, and no problems with one small exception working on HDV in V8. I read a lot of good things about Gearshift, and even bought the HDV book from VASST. I almost bought Gearshift, then decided to try it out first. I took a 16 minute HDV m2t, followed the directions on Gearshift to set up a proxy. Two hours later, it, or so I thought, finished the proxy, but no, it started rendering ANOTHER file, which obviously was going to take another two hours to render. The first file was 117Gigs, the original m2t was only 3.5 Gigs. And, I could NOT cancel the renders, I finally had to ctl alt tab end task about 7 times to make it stop. And I was SO sleepy, it was by now quite late at night. I MUST have been doing something wrong, I do trust VASST, but gee, WHERE was my "time saving"?

Either you have a *really* slow computer, or you selected the "Uncompressed" template for your "proxy" rather than a DVfile.

The computer must not be too slow, since i can work with the m2t files quite easily, and that may be my best direction. I'll look again, but really thought I followed the directions in the Gearshift manual, and your video.
Like I said, it MUST be something I did, but definitely not the computer.
One other question though, why was it starting a second render?

I'm a gearshift novice (still on the trial). but I suspect you also checked the option for YUV conversion?

I check only the option for the DV proxy and I only get a single render.

I stopped using Gearshift form HDV clips when I got a Core2Duo. I still use it for AVCHD though. AVCHD has given Gearshift a second life since IMHO, it is the best way to work with this format.

Like has been mentioned above, make sure you just check the proxy tab and not the Intermediate. Using Gearshift to make intermediates is a good way to convert from a hard to work with format like AVCHD to an easier to use intermediate form like Cineform, but it is not what you want to do when you are going to work with proxies.

Thanks so much Laurence! I may try it one more time, double-checking what you listed. I too am using a dual-core with 4G ram, it handles the m2t files smoothly, so I'll likely save my money for a different product, lots of them to choose from these days.
I can't think of a good reason to add another step or two into the work flow if they're not necessary.

You'll have no problem working with the m2t files directly with that system.
